Thanks for the link. There will likely be a stipulation that Conicelli Toyota does the install (they were closed when I called to confirm). That would be around 4-5 hours of labor at dealership rates, which would likely add ~$450-$600 to the cost. $2,600-$2,800 installed seems to be the going rate, which is lower than what the OP was quoted.

Kansas City has the lowest rate that I've seen at $2,200 installed, but the travel costs would eat up the savings. Ditto with Conicelli Toyota in Pennsylvania. If the OP decides to go the OEM route, it's best to find a competitive rate in the Houston area.

As a reminder, double check the details about the core charge. The dealership will need on an OEM core in return for refunding the core charge, which will be around $1,300. The OP could go with Houston Hybrid Battery, referenced in post #6 (~$1,400 installed with a 2 year warranty for a reconditioned battery), which is a pretty good price. But then, Jose Duque won't be able to purchase an OEM battery from a dealer as a plan B, without paying the core charge in the future.

 

Can't say anything good or bad about Houston Hybrid Battery, they seem competitive.

Why don't you also try calling Jessica ( @Hometown Hybrids ) in Houston at Hybrid Car Battery Repair & Replacement | Hometown Hybrids - willing to bet you won't find a better deal in the greater area. New OEM Gen3 installed for $2295 out the door

 

If that price holds true for gen3, that would be the lowest price I've seen, especially when you factor in mobile installation. (That's the price for a gen2 battery- as per the link.) I'm hoping that these prices continue to drop.

Toyota battery prices dropped $400 in January. @ericbecky and others here have confirmed that. We have seen a couple of dealers online list batteries for $1625 plus core but nobody ships them.
Installation would be extra.

 

Yep. Just assume the installation runs around $500-$600, but you'll still need to travel there.

 

Umm. I see the price as for either a Gen 2 or a Gen 3 battery pack. That are not offering one of each for that price.

Curious what the extra $650 in cost (1 yr vs 2yr) accomplishes in term of 'a little more to the battery', beyond the extended warranty of course.

Never heard of reprogramming the software before, that already sounds a little funny

Did someone clean your HV battery fan before or after the installation, a very important thing to do and many include that in the price

I believe Matt @Texas Hybrid Batteries mentioned cleaning the MAF sensor and intake whenever they do a HV battery replacement, did you notice anyone poking around under the hood?

I know the leap from $1400 to $2300 is great, but was there another reason for going with the used battery over a new battery?

 

My guess is it will die for real this summer when it's stressed the most.

 

With close to 200K on the clock and you driving 35K miles a year, I'd not invest $4k into the car, not even $3k. Maybe $2k at most. though it really depends on what condition the rest of the car is, if the engine is running strong and the interior/exterior are still cherry, then that changes things some.

I'd seriously consider trading it in soon for another Prius, doesn't even have to be new if $$$ is an issue. You could probably find a nice used 2014-2015 with low miles for a lot less than a new Prius if you shopped around aggressively. Even a 2016 with low miles if you're set on the 4th gen.

Very possible. It was like late July last year on a real hot day the dreaded check hybrid system warning first came on. So far, now that I don’t have to use the heater, it’s back up to 52, 53 mpg. I’ll post what happens this summer if anyone’s interested.
