Some observations after doing my own oil change on the Prime

    I just completed my first oil change post toyota care...what i discovered was that the last oil/cartridge filter change...the tech impacted the filter cover onto the cartridge...It took an impact wrench set at 300ft/lbs to get it off...Specs are 13-18ft/lbs...we ended up with a new filter cap due to the fact we had to destroy the old one getting it off...Never again are they going to touch my oil filter again...I let the dealership know about ,as well...they reported the oil tech is no longer there...I wonder why...) Also they were also saying that the issue is so prevalent that Toyota has decide to start reverting back to screw on filters starting in 2019...That's sort of dumb ...all you have to do is hand tighten the filter cap to 13ft/lbs and issue solved...

    The screw on types apparently started on the Primes built starting Nov 2017. So far, from asking members here, they've all switched to the screw on type. This helps explain why.

    Just another reason why I've done all my own oil changes on all my vehicles. I know not everyone can or wants to but it's a good opportunity to get under the vehicle to check things out like boot health, etc.

    Sorry you had trouble, but it does not surprise me. The oil change person is the entry level guy.

    I have done just about all my work on all my cars except warranty work and recalls through the years and the only thing I really messed up on was an oil change. I installed the wrong oil filter and lost an engine. It happens.

    Ouch!!!! That hurts. I once installed the wrong punch in a press and wiped out $38,000 worth of tooling, which I spent the rest of the day replacing and re-shimming. Sure glad they didn't make me pay for THAT!! :eek:

    My first car was a '63 VW Beetle. I used a Chilton book to set the tappets. It ran like crap and was not derivable. Tore my hair out until I finally saw the numbering on the cylinders illustration in the Chilton book was wrong compared to the hidden cylinder number stamps on the engine itself. They were hard to see so I relied on the book which was for a '63 Beetle. I was hacked. It did make a nice fire starter. ;)

    Stories like this are the reason I want to do my own oil changes. My last new car had the oil filter tighten too much from factory.

    I just did my oil and filter change at 5,200 miles. The oil was still a light color. I glad I did my research about the filter types and tools on this forum. It was my first time changing a cartridge type filter. I can't decide if I want to take it to the dealer for the 10k maintenance.

    Confirmed my brand new 2019 prime premium has spin on oil filter Part Number - 90915-10003. I like the new plastic cover panel compared to 3rd Gen hinged access panel.

    I just did the oil change on our 2019 purchased 2 months ago, and the oil filter was over tightened, resulting in the following:

    But the screws for the oil change door do help:

    Good point. Most dealer workstations will have a metered delivery nozzle connected to their large quantity fresh oil storage tanks. The mechanic only has to dial-in the number of units, hang the nozzle and press the trigger. Opening user bottles, finding a funnel and fiddling with all that is NOT what the want - or do, unless you're watching them. Also not being OEM the "parts" warranty is most likely void...

    Our dealership uses meter dispensed bulk oil, and as far as I know, never shoots it directly in to the crankcase; instead they dispense it into large, graduated beakers. I went on a new owner's tour and saw several of the beakers, prefilled, for next morning I guess.

    I purchase bulk oil from them, in a No-Spill container with gradations down the side, and the amount I get is always spot-on. They've told me they just enter the amount on their dispenser.

    The consequences of not using the oil supplied by the customer are way more extreme than the slight (if any) convenience of not using it. And if it meets the specs in the manual, it will not void the warranty not matter what brand of oil you give them.
