Parking pawl problem?

    My 2016 Three w/Advanced Tech Package seems to have a parking pawl issue. It is now rolling back about 6"/15.24 cm after I place the car in Park.

    It used to roll back only about 1"/2.5 cm or so.

    Is this a parking pawl problem or something else?

    If I park on a slight incline, mine rolls back a few inches. But that's only because I was STUPID and didn't apply the PARKING BRAKE first. On flat ground, no roll back, but I usually always step on the parking brake. (20 guys! will respond and say they've NEVER used the parking brake in their life!!:ROFLMAO: Too lazy, I guess.)

    I just don't like the "feeling" of the car's weight resting on the pawl.

    Manual says to always press the foot parking brake before turning the engine off. P will be activated automatically when you turn the ignition off. Nobody should be relying on P alone to keep the car stationary. It's not designed to be used on its own. P is a backup and supplementary to the foot activated parking brake.

    I ALWAYS use the parking brake!! Look at the actor (Anton Yelchin, Star Trek) who was run over/killed by his own car! Safety first, kids!!

    But to answer your question... Not sure if 6" is bad or not. P has to take up all the slack in the system, all the way from the eCVT, to the flex in the rubber on the tyres. Mine certainly moves somewhere between an inch and maybe 4, but as this had only happened to me on the rare occasions I've forgotten to apply the foot parking brake, it could well be more under some circumstances.

    unlikely there is a problem. after 14 years of prius, i have found they roll more sometimes than others. not sure what the variables are, maybe where the tranny stops and slope?

    I'm thinking the distance between the cogs under the parking pawl hasn't changed. :) I wonder if you, earlier, just had a run of instances where (when you noticed) the position where you'd stopped was within an inch or so of the pawl meeting the cog, and you later happened to have a run where (when you noticed) you happened to stop closer to six inches away, and that was enough to seem like a real change and not a statistical artifact.

    I tried it a few times today when I parked - one time I feel it was at least 100 mm, but only a gradual down-hill. The other 2 it was more like 20-30 mm. I never use the park-brake in my carport - it's dead level and doesn't move at all.

    I really couldn't say, but logic tells me that it is still working, albeit with a greater distance of travel, so I wonder if it really matters. The pawl itself must be ok, so maybe one of the gates has chipped off (?) if there is such a thing. Then, a loose chunk of metal in the works could present a problem. All critiques welcome as I'm only guessing and ridicule will be allowed. :sneaky:
