Hi all- My liftgate garnish broke and I want to replace it myself. The instructions seem straight forward but wanted to double check I am ordering the right part.

I attached 4 pictures with what appear to be the snapped joints. 1 looks kind of weird, almost like the bolt broke.

    Anyways I figure I need 3 pieces:

    1) Liftgate Garnish
    2) Prying tool to remove the trunk cover inside
    3) 10mm deep socket

I have a backup camera, but once I confirm this piece has the slot for it, I was going to purchase this from Amazon and see if my local mechanic could put it on for me because I don't own those tools and I don't have 1-2 hours (assuming I'm a newbie and can't do anything right).

I figure if I can buy the part and do it myself it should look ok. I have zero plans to pain this as this is a 2006 model.

    Thank you!

No prying tool needed, just the 10mm deep socket. Easy DIY once you get replacement. 15 minute job

Thank you, do you mean prying tool isn't required to pull off the back of it? Do I simply unscrew the bolts and then screw them back on?

Not sure if you looked at that Amazon link but that appears to be the part number and comes with new bolts. Not sure what else is needed?

The back cover is held on by 11 blue clips, you have to forcefully just pull downward to remove the cover. No need to pry.

After the cover is removed, you'll see the 4 nuts you need to remove. The bolts are attached to the garnish itself, nuts hold it in place

How do you remove the prius emblem from the old piece and put onto the new piece?

Most people buy them "used" on ebay, craigslist, or junk yards. That way the color will be matched to your car. What color is your car?

Autobeyours.com should have it. They specialize in Prius car parts (and reselling cars them too)

Ok thanks. I'm buying the amazon aftermarket one for $57 and shipped to my door. I think you can jimmy off the old prius logo from the old part and put it on the new piece. I've seen someone else do that here and they posted a pic at this thread.

That Red Prius looks like my car LOL. It has an OEM black garnish, from a black Prius. It's not aftermarket.

With all due respect, the post with that red prius said this:

"Dealership quoted me about $500 to replace it. Part was available online in my Barcelona red color for $255. I bought a aftermarket, non Toyota part off ebay for $45. I decided that I didn't know if Icould ever get paint to match, so I left it the black paint primer color, like another diy replacer on this forum. Glass directly above it is black so it looks different but not odd. With a DEEP 10mm socket ($8 from home Depot) and an automotive pry tool from advance auto (saw it in on a YouTube video), the repair took 3 hours. And That's because I am slow and cautious (plus I had to use goo gone to remove the tape residue). I also had to carefully pry the Toyota symbol and transferred to the new piece. My car lift gate / rear garnish also has the backup camera and the smart button, which weren't hard to fit in the new piece"

I've been corrected. That looks pretty good for non OEM part. I replaced my red garnish with a black oem one from a car I was parting out.

No worries, so do you know if you can pull the old emblem off the old dead part and put it into this aftermarket part?

it looks like there are 2 holes in it for something, I looked at my old piece and it does not come off easily

You can probably pull it off, use some type of fishing line and cut away the glue....like if you were flossing. You can heat it up with a blow dryer or glue gun to soften the glue. The holes are probably alignment holes for the emblem.

OK. What kind of glue to put it back on? I don't even care if it's on or not.

Maybe you can post this as a new question. People that may have done it before, could give you a better answer on the glue used.

An update: I got the part in 2 days and installed it. Learning points: If possible try to replace your liftgate switch at the same time. a 12 year old prius has the parts corroded so bad that it was impossble to remove the old pushbutton switch bracket. In addition, the liftgate switch has all that gumminess so try to wear gloves or if possible replace the whole thing. I ended up just not installing the pushbutton switch. It took 2 hours from start to finish because I am a newbie but it looks like the red prius above. It was otherwise super easy with the 10mm socket wrench. I ended up using krazy glue to put the emblem back on. Ideally you should buy 3M adhesive but I didn't want to spend more money on this fix as I don't care if its perfect or not.

I think I'd be concerned about how durable the Krazy Glue would be long term.
I think it's a great product but in some applications it can become brittle once it drys out and with the passage of time. Most of the time I have tried to use it, it has held for 2-3 months...but inevitably seems to dry out and separate.

I think I would of made the minimal investment into the 3M adhesive.

true, but if it falls out I also could care less. I honestly don't want to spend one extra penny on superficial items related to my car.
