TOYOTA now has 5yr, unlimited km warranty (-and, conditionally, 7yr, with 10yr on Hybrid Battery)

I get range anxiety - when the electric is almost used up in my wife's plug-in minivan. Or is that better called cash burning, gas using smog creation anxiety.

Hyundai now is offering a lifetime US warranty on their batteries in hybrid and electric vehicles for the original purchaser (10 yr, 100K for subsequent owners).

In my opinion, improved battery warranties would be a real game changer for hybrid and electric cars and trucks that will be following.

 

sure ... but anyone who's had a good amount of capacity loss on their hybrid battery (phev or hev) can tell you that capacity loss is not part of the warranty, whether long or short. That 'capacity loss' warranty characteristic is unique to Tesla. Original Honda Hybrid capacity loss was so severe that they formed a class action. Although the class originally won, it was later settled out. The people that opted out of that class law suit eventually lost.
Think I'm kidding? Download the warranty PDF & do a search for every instance of "battery". There are only about a ½ dozen. You will not see anything specific about capacity loss. So now you know. Now, if your battery completely dies? Yellow triangle every time you try to start? Now the plugin battery warranty will kick in. We who were early adopters with the Nissan Leaf found this out the hard way. However the class-action didn't really do that great. A rebuilt pack if you lost over 30% in the first year. Even so - many owners did lose that much. Plus you got a bunch of free quick charging. They got a "deal" for a $5,000 battery replacement once you lost over 30% in more than a year - which Nissan recently jacked up to $8,000. imo - a plugins' traction pack warranty is the Dirty Little Secret for most manufacturer's plug-ins. There are so many models now on the market, this may be getting better, I hope.

The old Honda hybrid, being a partial hybrid with a smaller battery, was more vulnerable to capacity loss, and more effected by it, than the Prius is.

Full EVs obviously have the problem that any capacity loss at all results in loss of range.

With the Prius, the engine and battery can work at the same time with any percentage from 0-100% coming from either power source. There are news articles of Priuses that at 200k miles lost 10% of capacity and had absolutely no observable effects, 1mpg or less loss. A Prius will still get substantial mileage even if it's battery degrades to half its original capacity(as long as it, or one of it's cells, hasn't completely died), since it only really uses that capacity to store energy that would have otherwise been lost to heat(braking, engine running higher power than needed for current speed, etc.). You'd have shorter EV mode range, but very similar mileage.
