If I was you I wouldnt touch water pump as they last longer than 300000miles providing you change the coolant at every 100000miles. Anyway if you still want to go ahead please use Aisin as they are the manufacturer of toyota water pump so when you remove the old water pump it will have Aisin Japan written on it. I have seen someone selling the genuine toyota water pump for £157 from japan.

Just thinking strategy: don't put too many routine chores between you and getting the head gasket replaced. Maybe the plugs too, since you're right there. Do that, button it up, and drive it or two, see how it goes.

Then, address the rest, and prioritize, maybe start with the EGR and intake manifold.

Has that been your experience? Other PCers have found them to fail before 200k?

I plan on changing mine around 150k so that it doesn't take down my head gasket.

My water level dropped almost 3/4” since yesterday and my oil is a little milky. I’m afraid a head gasket change is now a given. Should I order the Toyota head gasket or get the Beck/Arnley three layer head gasket?

Get the Engine Overhaul Gasket Kit from Toyota. It includes all of the gaskets that you will need; you will need more than just the headgasket. The o-rings in the cyl head, timing cover and camshaft areas will be rock hard. You will also need the intake and exhaust manifold gaskets, valve cover gasket, dipstick tube seal, thermostat gasket and valve stem seals - all of which are included in the engine overhaul gasket kit.

Cost is $259 msrp for the kit. Part #04111-37315.

    edit: corrected part number

Aisin is the supplier of water pumps to Toyota. When you buy the Aisin pump for this application, it is the same pump as the one from the dealer but with the Toyota emblem ground off.

Beck/Arnley does not make any parts - they are a reboxer.

Thanks. I’ll get it all ordered and get ready to dive in.
Do you think I should go ahead and get the water pump or is that the least of my problems right now?

They're the same. I bought the B/A one a few months ago. B/A one actually has longer warranty i think 3 vs 1 yr. B/A one still has the aisin sticker on it.

Should the part number be ...-37315 ? (See attached TSB's regarding piston/ring replacement for oil consumption, they list the gasket kit in the second TSB.)

Also, assuming you got that kit: did it come with a packing list, parts numbers and descriptions of the contents? If so, could you post a scan or picture? Or pdf if you got it? Thanks.

McGeorge Toyota is discounting the kit, assuming it's the one with part number ending in "5", only $170~:

I ordered the kit and yes it is updated part number 04111-37315. It should be here next week. I’ll follow up and answer the questions when I get it in hand. I ordered already from Canelback Toyota. I think I paid $189

You are correct- I just re-checked my receipt.

No, the kit do not come with a packing list. Some items are packaged separately and identified, but most were not. Basically, most of the small gaskets are in one bag and the bag is laminate-wrapped against the headgasket.

It is critical to save the old gasket so that you can match it up with the appropriate new one in the kit.

I would also order head bolts, two tubes of fipg black, thermostat and spark plugs if you have not done so. Proper clamping force is critical and regardless of Toyota’s position, I would not reuse those bolts.

Also, CRC gasket remover, plastic razor blades and a fine wire brush is your best option for cleaning the gasket surfaces.

I’ll be sure to keep the gaskets as you recommend. And I’ll order the head bolts, 2 tubes of FIPG black and I’ll pick up some CRC gasket remover.

I already ordered the thermostat and changed our plugs about 300 miles ago. I’ll check the plugs but I’m hoping I haven’t fouled any.

What is the consensus on the water pump? Hold off or drop another $250 now?

I am still running the water pump off the engine of mine that failed, as the newer engine I bought came without one. No issues since installation. Maximum coolant temp I have seen is 196, and that was running 75+mph uphill on a 7.5 percent 2 mile grade.

Yes on the water pump. I only drove for 50 miles and my plug for cyl #2 was completely fouled (and the plug was only 5000 miles old).

Do you have an angle torque wrench? If not, you may want to invest in one. The head bolts are 36 ft lbs plus 90 deg plus 45 deg. As an alternative, you can mark using paint and guestimate.

I also replaced the intake VVT gear on mine. Mine rattled sometimes rattled for a second during cold starts. It is a but pricey, but it is easy to replace once the timing chain and cam housing is off.

It is up to you, but I wouldn’t...

I went out and purchased a 1/2” angle torque wrench just for this repair.

Consistent clamping force is critical for proper headgasket sealing.
