Anyone have experience with tire repair kit?

It was snipped as close as I could get it, and probably wasn't even touching the road most of the time.

I have four tires that are round and hold air now, I'm happy.

 

I *hate* that when they leave the plug sticking out above the tread! Conscientious mechanics will trim the plug flush with the tread using a single-edge razor...

 

Tough ones will use a double edged razor.

When I first opened this thread, kithmo's post was repeated twice more (hence my hat-trick comment), but when I came back later to read pp's reply, the number of repeats had reduced to one.

 

I had a completely flat tire today. I thought I'd give the Toyota issued inflator and sealant without any directions--typical behavior on my part. Once I figured out how to connect the two, I hooked up the hose to the valve and plugged in the pump. Turning it on it slowly drains the jug of sealant into the tire. And, lo and behold, the tire began to inflate. It took a long time and I could hear the air hissing out of the nail-hole at the top of the tire at the eleven o'clock position (the valve was down at the five o'clock position). I got it to probably about 25 psi and drove away. I figured, not unlike a bicycle, the sealant works it's way into the hole once you start driving. I drove to closest tire service center and topped off the tire with air. There wasn't anymore sealant seeping out although the inside of my wheel well was coated with white sealant. I got home and it stayed inflated the whole way.
I'm hoping the hi-tech valve didn't get destroyed by the goop, and I'm exploring new tires now... But, it worked. The gizmo and goop worked. I was really surprised.

 

You need to look at the instructions in the Manual - it's a several step process. Only 18 pages - but critical for safety. It includes many safety instructions including " ".

Don't drive for long before repairing it.

There may be differences between the PiP & the Gen 4, but most of the warnings should apply.

 

Sorry, I didn't realise you had an older car - did you check the expiry date of the sealant?

Re the TPMS - the Gen 4 Manual says "After use of liquid sealant, make sure to replace the tire pressure warning valve and transmitter when repairing or replacing the tire"

 

@shugo If the puncture on your tire was just a nail in the tread, a simple plug-repair would very likely have fixed things, permanently: the tire could continue to be used, and no gummed up rim and TPMS sensor.

I've done a couple of plug repairs, about 6 years back now I think. One of the tires (a snow tire) is on the car right now, and the other (one of the OEM all-seasons), I just retired due to age.

For your scenario, without a temp spare, you need a plug repair kit, and some method of airing up the tire after. Even a bicycle pump will do, in a pinch.

 

I got a nail in my tire two years ago. I had a 12V pump and a Blackjack tire plug kit. It took about half an hour — the puncture was hard to find. But the plug lasted over 40,000 miles, until I replaced all the tires with a new set. That’s way less trouble and expense than using tire glue.

 

Yeah was taking off the snow tires yesterday, and I like to roll them along, pry the gravel out of the tread*, which simultaneously serves as a puncture inspection. One tire has what looks like a chewing gum remnant: the plug repair, from about 6 years back.

* Wear safety glasses when doing this, to protect your eyes, and/or your glasses.
