Replacing engine water pump 2013 v

    I couldn’t do a search so I apologize if there is already a thread on my problem.
    I have a 2013 Prius V with a check engine light. Took it to the mechanic read the codes has no electric feedback from the water pump. I’m getting heat after the car has run for a little bit. They’re quoting me $1100 to replace it. Is this a DIY job? And what recommendations can you make for which water pump to buy?

    Here is a video:



    Check Rockauto for the pump get the Aisin, they manufacture for Toyota, $250. Also, get the rubber gasket don't reuse the old one.

    If you don't diy, find a independent who will charge labor only and you supply the part. Your drive out price should be way less than dealership shop.

    Smart mechanics don't do installs of parts people just bring in lest there be a defective or missing part and then the shop and the connected tools (lift, for example) would be tied up while the car owner deals with getting a new part. The shop owner is entitled to some "profit" for handling the parts. So don't be too surprised if they don't want to go this.

    Thank you. This is really helpful

    That makes sense. I’m in home-improvement and we typically don’t install customer supplied material, it usually causes problems because they don’t order enough and feel entitled to micromanage our crew

    I went to a shop that I trust. They’re very good mechanics and do all the work on my wife’s car. They typically give her very good deals because she advocates and refers a lot of customers to them. I’m just having a hard time wrapping my head around $1100 to replace this part. He initially said $1300 then corrected himself and apologized

    I’ve done the job and not sure where that price comes from;).

    The pump is the most expensive part and the only other thing you need (short of coolant) is the form-a-gasket. But I guess if you go to toyota for te pump the price is 2x what the rock auto price is for the exact same pump:cool:.

    Unless the shop really knows the customer, and knows the customer knows all of what the job requires, and doesn't have the facilities to DIY.

    I am lucky to have such a shop. Especially for the ancient sports car.

    My 2010 had its water pump replaced by my dealer at a Toyota dealership before I bought the car. It was still under warranty from Toyota when I bought it. While I can’t say much it cost him, I am assuming somewhere around $500.

    So my son came over before I got back from work. He replaced it in about 2-1/2 hrs start to finish.

    I’ve been trying to run in maintenance mode and circulate air out but can’t find instructions. I followed the instructions on YouTube but it does not end up showing maintenance mode on the dash like it does in the videos
    If I’ve set the car in maintenance mode will the hybrid warning system trigger?
    Any instructions on setting in the maintenance mode?

    Key on, engine off...

    Immediately perform the following:

    Press accelerator twice while in park
    Shift to neutral, press accelerator twice.
    Shift back to Park, press accelerator twice

    At this point you should see “maintenance mode” appear.

    That’s the procedure I followed. I did it several times and “maintenance mode” never came on the screen. The hybrid warning (yellow car with ! through the middle) started flashing and gas engine ran continuously. I was nervous with that flashing so I only let it run for a few minutes.
    Thank you for the feedback everyone.

    Regarding the water pump.. my son came to the house after work. I was late getting back. He had the car apart by the time I got there. New pump was in and finished in less than an hour. It took longer to put the bottom guard back on and bleed the system! Just drove a couple hours and all seems good.

    Each step must be performed within 5 secs. Could that be why?
