Oil Catch Can, Eliminate that knock!

    Great vegetarians think alike? :LOL:

    OCC works fine but I don't recommend that catch can though. The gasket on the top lid expands, and once you open it, there's no way to put the lid back on with the expanded gasket. I just used high temp pipe seal tape that's seals water & gas, which I wrapped it as the gasket ring.

    Just went down to the shop this morning actually, was going to post an update. He has it all apart and says we caught it in time. Nothing was warped or bent. Sent parts to the machine shop and is just waiting on the water pump to be delivered. He did say the EGR was really clogged so, confirms for me that it was probably never cleaned out.

    While he has it apart, I also have him replacing my driver side CV axle. So far, pretty pleased with this shop, he took on the extra job, no problem.

    Cool. It goes to show you how small the "window of opportunity" is for these head gasket repairs. If the car has been misfiring for a week or two, it could be too late.

    I would not allow him to replace the CV axle unless he is using a Genuine Toyota axle or is rebooting the original one. The new aftermarket axles are all garbage.

    I don't have time to read through this whole thread right now, but this looks like the best place to ask my question.

    I did the EGR cleanup. There was oil and carbon buildup from the air intake through the EGR system. You could see it gumming up the walls before the air intake too. I cleaned everything best I could and put it together. Everything ran fine. Then the slight oil burning I had experienced before went crazy. I burned 6 quarts over a 1600 mile road trip the other week. I don't know how my car is still running. Now, after all that, the burning is slowing back down. Could cleaning the EGR have changed the pressures in the engine and caused it to leak more oil past the piston rings? And now the EGR is blocked again and things are plugging back up and equalizing? Could an oil-catch can help when you are burning that much oil?

    So when did the dash light tell you the oil level was low and when did the egr cleaning occur?

    Once the dash light tells you the oil level is low, it’s too late and the engine is starved of oil. So if right after, you have the wrong root cause.

    Our old 2010 would consume more oil on road trips and that is not uncommon as the speeds are higher and things are working harder.

    Something is seriously hooped; that is terminal oil consumption. Could it be a clogged PCV valve, causing high pressure in the crankcase, pushing oil up past the piston rings. Where it burns, clogs up the EGR, which raises engine temps, which makes matters worse?

    We could start a pool on when the head gasket will blow...

    I have tried this type of compact baffled occ(bronze filter) and it works well.
    It is pretty efficient although little oil remained in the intake manifold.
    I think it removed more than 90% of oil in the intake.
    Recently, I tried the new baffled carbon fiber occ(cyclone type baffle).
    More than twice the price and pretty good looking.
    However, the oil catch performance sucks.
    It removed less than half of oil in the intake.
    I think it suits for turbo charger and high rpm engine since seperation efficienccy is proportional to inlet air speed inside occ.
    As for eco or urban driving style, the seperation efficiency is not worth the price.
