Hey guys. I figured to post this question here since it's related to the VVT-I / Red Bullet. During my research of the VVT-I and what it does, I came to find out that there's a VVT-I filter...is this true with our Prius'? I noticed that there's a plug of some sort right underneath the VVT-I slot in the Prius C cars. Has anyone attempted to open it and find the filter in there? If we do have a tiny filter in there and it's clogged up, that can't be a good thing with overall performance of the solenoid or in general. Any thoughts?

Yes, the filter is merely a fine mesh metal screen behind that plug. I think it's been in every thread discussing the vvt. except this one I suppose.

Cleaning the screen should be good for at least 15 horsepower and 9 mpg.

There have been a few threads on here about engine performance/mpg being very poor and finding this filter in unsatisfactory condition. A bit of cleaning and woohoo....back to normal.

Thanks TMR! Good info. I read up on those other threads from ur link. Ty. I may order a new one since they r so cheap. Can't hurt. Id rather not bother taking this one out and cleaning it without a replacement since the seal rings will prob need replacing afterwards once disturbed. (y)

Hey all....first lengthy run on fresh full tank of gas with red bullet. Some highway at about 55-60...some side roads.
I hit 71mpg on the side roads, but declined quick when i hit the highway. Anyway...im pleased with a 68.7mpg avg so far (according to the dashboard). Will calculate again at fuel refill in near future. I'll keep posting as i go. (y)

Hi priusCpilot sorry for responding to you with such delay, I must have been all droopy with toxins and antibiotics running through my system when your entry came through my notice. Most probably passed out and forgot about it until now that I am near to normal functioning. Still cant eat a whole lot but its getting better.

I think "more power" would not be the word I would use. I believe more efficiency will be best to cover it all.

For a daily driver situation the VVTI will be able to respond to demand twice as fast and channel oil towards the veins faster with the improved oil flow dynamics by the Red Bullet. Giving you that extra efficiency every step of the way within the VVTI operating spectrum.

For Chip on the other hand, he gained spontaneous access to the WOT/paddle to the metal setting on the computer, he saved precious time getting there thanks to the faster response speed of the Red Bullet, by pushing the veins from idle all the way to heavy load and high speed setting with swift and efficiency made the difference.

The manufacture said to me once in a meeting, they first came out with 3 variants; #1 designed for power. #2 designed for a balance of efficiency and power. #3 designed for efficiency. He even told me I could even get in between variants if I wanted, but due to the sales volume they rolled back production to by order and stuck with #2 to cut down on setting costs.

I hope this answers your question and look forward to seeing you on Guess the Gas for A Red Bullet contest.

I'm thinking Montgomery is referring to taking off the ECO mode and just going with power all the time in our toys. My ECO button is always on, but i can take it off at the push of a button which is located by the emergency break. Sounds like the Toys in Taiwan may not have this optional feature?

    Hi CSuirp,

I am feeling better, just still slow on intake of food. I think it was from my late snack of teppanyaki.
As for the power mode, I have seen a button on the Prius Gen 3 and on Prius V says power mode and maybe on my test drive of the 2019 Prius C had it too, but on my 2013 I have only EV and ECO which are both turned off since I got the car. They are located where you say, under the handbrake. I told myself one day I will turn it on, but never got round to it. I think after the 900km challenge maybe I will do some dry runs for 1k challenge and see if i can get it with the ECO mode on.

Thanks for checking up on me!

That would truly be amazing especially in the city and not on highway. It will break records on a lot of vehicles. I don't think even a diesel could do 1000km on 36l of fuel on the highway.
    Truly amazing.
I remember driving a Skoda Fabia when I lived in Europe, that car amazed me aready on how efficient it was. I think 5.5 on the country roads. And 7.5 in the city. Never would i have thought it would be possible to do sub 4l per 100km in the city. We really came a long way.
Remenber how badly reviewed when the prius 1st came out. I think there was a story somewhere that Ford or GM came out with it way ahead but for some reason withdraw and scraped it all. The Prius had a harsh birth too.

I didn't know on that the power mode isn't on the "C" model. Power mode forces the computer to change the sensitivity on the gas pedal. Putting my car in the power mode, with an Injen air filter and the red bullet..................................sounds like a kick in the pants for fast fun!!

Oh I do like the sound of that set up. I am pretty sure now that I have recovered, the new or shell we say the last generation of the Prius C has the power button also.
With how the population growth is going, I think most vehicles should be hybrid. Taipei is a high congestion area of the world there is no question about it but I can tell you Vancouver has its bites too during rush hour. My wife just told me that gas price is up to C$1.60 for a liter of regular. The VW Eos can run on regular but man is it a gas drinker in the city with a 2.0 Turbo. If you were to have a little summer ripping fun, C$1.80 for premium I would imagine. Ouch I guess no fun this summer.
I am thinking really hard that we should get a Prius there also...

Shame that the new Prius C models are not as fuel efficient as older models. I guess the slight increase in engine hp with the new models was the trade off.

So, I’ve not seen this question/answer (or simply missed it)...does this void your manufactures warranty/extended warranty if installed?

I would think it would however it's a 5 mins job to swap back to OEM should there be a need to head back for warranty purposes.

    Hi Dwhopson,

I have extended warranty here from Toyota, like Royston said swap it out in 5 min, and it supersedes the OEM quality standards. So it like getting your oil change by Mobil 1 with premium synthetic superseding the OEM standard and keeping the receipt, Toyota cant stiff you for it is what one of our members said.

Took my car for service at the stealership, they didn't even say anything when they saw it. Only comment was; your car is in pretty good condition. You must look after your engine well.

My average really hit the rocks when I only did 3km trips or those to the shops and back trips.
Right now sitting just above 27.1
Will work on getting it back up!
