I couldn't find the answer to my question after searching this website, or Google – which only states the California battery warranty is 10 years or 150,000 miles whichever comes first. I plan on driving the car in New York, but willing to go to California to buy the car and bring it back (looking at a '12-'15 newer/~50-60k miles is my goal).

So if I buy the car in California, and register it in NY, will the warranty still be valid for the 10 years/150k?

I suppose though that the warranty might not be as relevant as California prices are $1-4k more than other states.

Your battery (and Hybrid) warranty for Gen 2 and 3 and v only depends on two things in the US (except Hawaii):

In which state was it originally sold, and when.

In which state is it registered currently.

If both of these are CARB states, like New York is, you have a 10 year/150,000 warranty.

If either is a nonCARB state, you have a 8 year/100,000 mile warranty

The 2014 list of CARB States in the US | PriusChat

Gen 1, Gen 4, and c are all 8/100,000. Hawaii is a separate distributor. CARB is the California Air Resources Board, whose regulations are followed by several states.

That's really important to know! That makes the search process more restrictive then imo.

So if I buy the car that was sold in NY, and register it say in Texas, but if there's an issue with the car, and I register it in NY, the warranty would then apply?

That is a long way to tow a car, but yes, that is the way I read the warranty. In that thread you will read other interpretations.

So the car doesn't work if the HV battery is malfunctioning? Or only when the battery is completely nonoperational.

The Hybrid Battery starts the engine, so if it 'throws a code' the engine won't start. The 12 volt battery just starts the computers, if the computers think it is unsafe or unwise, the hybrid battery remains isolated (as it always is when the car is off) and the engine won't start.

If the battery impairment offers no safety issues, you can drive the car.

This is for Gen 2, but the principals remain the same, just details differ.

The first 6 minutes discuss the Hybrid Battery.

So $1649 total? Are they Toyota cells? Is the mpg less than if you use Toyota brand?

they are rebuilt, not new. it's a process, some are more careful than others, but there is nothing like a new battery.
the biggest issue with rebuilt imo, is the number of times you break down, even if the company is still in business, and even if they actually fix it, instead of claiming their battery isn't the issue.

    i don't like being stranded.

They are not new. They are used rebuilt battery packs. The gas mileage will be the same as with a new battery. They work as well as a new one...until they don't. So the lifespan won't be the same as a new battery The price is less than a new one for the same reason a used car is priced lower than a new one. Because it's used, not because it's no good. Don't be afraid to get one just because some others are. Greenbean has been in business for a number of years, they aren't here to sell you a battery and then disappear on you.
    It's just another option.
You don't HAVE to buy a new hybrid battery.

If I needed one, I'd buy one from them, but then I'm the guy who bought a rebuilt titled 2015 Prius with 24k miles 2 years ago for $9k that has given me NO trouble whatsoever in the 24k miles I have driven it. Even if it did, that's the reason I paid $9k for it instead of the $15-16 they were going for at the time.

    Good Luck with your decision

I went to Toyota Dealer for recall and that toyota agent feaking lier or don't the answer. He told my prius only has 10000 miles on HV battery..

My 2013 Prius I bought and it original from Kansas and has been registered in California for more than 2yrs. Is it consider has 150,00 miles warranty on HV battery? Is this warranty still apply on rebuit or salvaged title?

Kansas is not a CARB state, so it is not a 150,000 mile or 10 year car..

Here is my prior essay on CARB warranty:
    CARB Warranty Ins-and-Outs (and In-Out-Ins) | PriusChat

I would say Toyota wants to handle complexities case by case. But their former rules state the car must be registered and normally driven in a state. So if I registered in MD just to get CARB warranty but still living in Virginia, they might say that was rule violation (let's say I purchased in MD for this example, which is common here).

I'd say we are not getting too many questions like that anymore.

I am a little unclear on what you are trying to do, but for example, many California residents have come to Maryland to purchase Prii, for example the orig 2012 Plug In Prius. At the time, Maryland price was up to ~$3000-5000 cheaper. Since Maryland was a CARB state, Toyota said this was OK and the cost saving more than paid for shipping cost back to CA. Buyers had to find a dealer willing to sell out of state, and for some reason, some dealers said that was not allowed. But in reality you could do it if you went to right dealers. We never figured out why some dealers refused and then gave out disinformation implying it was not possible at any dealership.

Just a thought, I would say CARB warranty questons are going away here on Prius chat. Could be less people checking in here with that issue, but I am thinking somewhere around 2008/2009 the batt life must have gotten better, so not too many people having the battery go south before the warranty expiration. Somewhere 2008-2011 the Prius sales really took off, so if we kept having batt problems at the old pace, I'd expect to hear more. Also as Jimbo states the newer Prii are all 8/100 so the newer owners do not have as much the issue of state differences in coverage, which is a good thing I think.

If NY is a CARB state, wouldn't it be easier just to buy it from NY?

rust in upstate - i'm avoiding pennsylvania, new york, vermotn, new hampshire, maine, Massachusetts, etc. Mainly looking at Virginia to Florida, Texas, and California. I'm willing to fly to California for the car and driving it back. Don't plan on living in upstate NY for very long, but knowing the rust issues around here, and it being unsightly, reducing the value of the car, and potentially destructive, makes it worth it to me.
