I stopped by my local Toyota dealer this afternoon to get some suspension parts for an older Camry. Strolled over to the service bays, asked if I could make an appointment for the 5K service (only at 4K now but headed out on a trip of at least 3K in 2 weeks). "Come on in" was the answer, done in 40 minutes including washing it.

    Can't beat that.

The kicker is: I didn't buy the car from them. I shopped there, but they only had Advanced with interior color I didn't want, and they weren't moving on prices. So, I bought mine out of state. The service guys hadn't seen many of this model - I would bet that dealer sold a half dozen Primes last year. But, I'll be taking the Prime to them for the service included in the purchase price, then I'll do it all myself.

Bought mine used from Tampa Hybrids. Sun Toyota very rarely sells Primes, too. In fact, the service writer had lots of questions which he prefaced with, "We don't see many Primes here." :D

I do most of my service myself, but they seem to still be happy to do the things I let them do. I told him that it's mostly just because I like fixing my own stuff. He was satisfied with that.

I had a similar conversation. "How do you like it", "how far does it go on electric", etc. I told him I didn't buy it from them, and the service guy could care less. I'm just another customer generating revenue (not a lot on this type of work, but they hope to capture you for life).

I've been told they make more from service than from car sales.

That is true. It's like selling inkjet printers - the printer is cheap but the ink is expensive.

I'm sure, given they are charging $100+/hr for labor. 1 of the 2 local Toyota dealers charges 20 minutes of time to put a new cabin air filter in. This after they've already spent the 30 seconds needed to remove the old one and the several minutes to bring it to you in the waiting area to show you it needs to be replaced. I always turn them down an change it myself, takes all of 2 minutes including emptying and refilling the glove compartment and opening the cardboard box the filter comes in.

In any case, I suspect there is nothing on the Prime during the free service period that requires any special knowledge.

Update for the 10K service - scheduled the appointment for 7 am, work was complete by 8:10 am. Doughnuts, cookies and coffee in the waiting area. Interesting that there were no sedans or Prii on the showroom floor - there was a Sequoia, Highlander, RAV4 and two Tacomas. That must be where the local market is headed in this area of the country.

This time they didn't bend my front license plate in the car wash - I specifically mentioned this to the service advisor at check in.

The dealer's listed price (no charge to me) for this service is $85.25. Labor $64.40 and parts $20.85. They use bulk 0W-20 oil at $4.24/quart. I may do what @jerrymildred did and take a jug down there and see if they will sell me oil cheap. Otherwise, 5 quarts of 0W-20 at local Walmart is $22.88.

Of interest, there is a standardized Multi-Point Inpsection Form attached to the invoice. The "Preventative Maintenance" section is interesting - they recommend a number of services that are well above and beyond the service intervals specified in the manual. In the attached snap, some of the items are not applicable to this vehicle, but some are. Hybrid cooling system at 60K, alignment annual or 15K, brake fluid at 45K, CVT service 60K. I am sure a lot of customers see this on the form and assume that is the Toyota recommendation.

Actually, I've never tried having them fill a jug for me. Must be someone else you're thinking of, jb. (I think I kind of remember reading about someone doing that, but don't remember who.)

I usually just buy the oil, filter, and washer from the dealer and have them dump my old oil while I'm there. Seems to me it comes to about $40, iirc. Unfortunately, they only sell in quart bottles. I used to almost always get oil from Walmart but the dealer is closer than Walmart and Walmart's price isn't enough lower to induce me to go farther for the oil.

That is @Mendel Leisk advocating to BYOJug for your oil. Does your Toyota dealer use genuine Toyota oil? My Toyota dealer seem to use Pennzoil bulk oil. I should have asked this before, but I noticed the oil change remainder sticker has Pennzoil logo on it.:( It was free Toyota care service, but I should have known better.

"Genuine Toyota oil" is a marketing term. Toyota buys their oil from an oil company, packaged with their label. From the owner manual:

Oil grade: ILSAC GF-5 multigrade engine oil

    Recommended viscosity: SAE 0W-20

The matching spec to ILSAC GF-5 is SN. This has been in place since 2010, so I'm confident that whatever 0W20 was in the barrel meets either of those two specs and meets the technical requirements.

Edit - now that you have piqued my curiosity, I called the dealer and they told me that the bulk oil is "Toyota brand oil".

Yes, but as @jb in NE pointed out, it's just a label. The back label says it's distributed in (and lists a bunch of Latin American countries) by Exon Mobil. So I assume that It's Mobil1 in disguise. They do offer another brand, but I forgot what it is.

What specs do they list on the back of the Toyota bottle? SN, SN-RC, SN Plus, ILSAC, etc.

I don't have any with me here at work. But I'd be totally flabbergasted if they sold oil with their brand name on it that didn't meet their own specs.

As would I. I'm just curious what specs they advertise on the back; ILSAC only or additional specs. If the specs match Mobil 1 cans, then that's a confirmation that it's Mobil 1 in the bottle.

Does it say on your bill/statement/invoice? When I'm buying bulk oil they treat it as a "service", and describe it as "Toyota" oil, on the invoice. I get both (synth) 0W20, for a couple of vehicles, and (conventional) 5W20 for a third vehicle. I don't think they'd be lying. It is pretty cheap: the bottled Toyota 0W20 is about $6.50 (CDN) per liter, and bulk is $4.95 currently (was $4.50 for quite some time). The 5W20 bulk is $2.80 per liter.

NO, my dealer's bill never specifies what "brand" of oil they have used. It is a menu item and it just says something like "10000 mile interval service with synthetic-oil". Not even 0W-20 is spelled out.
