Yeah I'm surprised too but I can't really confirm if threads were leaking or not. I can say now it isn't leaking there now

I don't think the valve cover is. I have yet to look up top with the UV in it. It looks like it where the head gasket is behind timing cover. I didn't put extra silicone on the joint when I fixed timing. So the timing cover probably has to come off.

Really hard to capture. It's probably leaking all down the silicone really need the UV to see this type of leak.. IMG_20191101_163118.jpeg

mm All I see is the blacklight. :)
Oil leaks can be a pain. Doesn't make it easier when you can't get in to see things.

Hard to get good photo of UV. It actually starts above that. I'm planning on resealing timing cover next week. 1853981944.jpeg

I'll take your word for it. :) It looked like a lot of permatex to me. But at least you know where it's
leaking from and can fix it.

Did you follow the pattern in the FSM and squeeze your bead of silicone on the inside portion of the holes?

Here's the instruction. I think for DIY, with the engine remaining in the car, you will only do the application at the engine split line directly on the engine, the rest you would apply on the cover?

Ok took off timing cover and started cleaning RTV off and right where it looked like it was leaking the RTV just wiped right off. Yeah that's confirmation that RTV was doing nothing.

I had ordered mahle jv5188 timing gasket set. I'm very impressed with the RTV they use. It's thicker, stickier, and seems to dry faster then permatex ultra grey.

Toyota Genuine Seal Packing Black, Three Bond 1207B

Sounds like your surface was not prepped correctly. RTV never wipes off in the manner described.

Permatex Ultra-Grey is recommended as an alternative, here:

Three Bond 1207 B sealant alternatives?

I think Permatex recommends to use fresh tubes too, after it's been opened and sitting around for a few years, it's not that good?

Ah woops, that's what you used??

mmm The right tool for the job.. imagine that! :)
Well, you learned something, and since you've removed the timing cover in and out of the car,
you have experience with both now! :)
And like "thecritic" stated, the surface probably had a little oil or grease on it, that's why it didn't stick.

But, now you know, and you'll repair it and it won't leak...
