    Hi all,

Previous post on grinding noise - ended up being a front bearing. After bearing replaced the driving is perfect but ABS AVC light comes on every once in a while. Did some searching and seems to be an issue others have come across before.

So - is there any consensus solution for the ABS light issue after changing a bearing?

    Thanks,
    Rob

Same thing happened to me. There is a metal cup shaped thing that has a hole in it that goes around the hub end of the axle that is in behind the hub assembly. That cup has a hole in it that the abs sensor has to perfectly in the center of that hole or it'll throw codes like it did with you. Easiest way to do it is to take the wheel off, caliper off, to where the rotor is loose, loosen the hub Castle nut up to where the axle can be moved in and out and breaks that cup loose (you'll hear it) take out the abs sensor and use a screwdriver to move the hole in that cup to match the hole the abs sensor goes in. Then put it all back together, clear the abs code and that should take care of it. The other problem might be the steering wheel position sensor. What I found before was you'll have to jump 2 pins on the OBD 2 port and it should reset that sensor.

I would say the same thing. When I replace the bearing or ball joint not long ago the lights came on the same way and the techstream was saying that my driver side ABS sensor is bad. But it wasn't bad actually. What i did is connected pin 4 and 13 I believe and pressed some buttons pressing in sequence with the brake pedal and the lights disappeared. I saw it somewhere on this forum but I cannot find it to show exactly what was the procedure but it took two minutes and a small piece of wire. I couldn't be more happier

Yeah I just watched this video on YouTube that explains how to reset it with a paperclip

Ok - this is driving me nuts...

To recap - my 08 prius had grinding noises, my local mechanic replaced the left front bearings and the grinding noises went away. The problem however is the ABS warning light now comes on, mostly when I go over 45 mph or so. The mechanic has reset the warning light, but it still keeps coming up with a "debris" code. Took it to the shop again this morning and he took it apart to make sure it was clean etc. but when I drove away the ABS light came back on. It is a new ABS sensor. In all I believe he as "reset" the warning light three times.

This morning the mechanic mentioned that there was a "rubber boot" that might be causing the problem and said that if the light comes back on he suggested removing this rubber thing. That no other ABS he's seen has a rubber boot like this and it might be catching rust etc. I then drove away and the ABS light came on again.

I stopped later at a pep boys and they wanted $144 just to look at it. No idea what a dealer would want. Money is an issue, Christmas is coming and I've already spent more than $500 on this.

So - looking for advice: Should I let the mechanic take off this rubber boot thing? Take it to pep boys friday morning to give them a shot at fixing it?

Also wanted to point out - the car is running just fine and braking with no problem. Just want to get the ABS right for the winter.

Thanks for any and all help,
    Rob

There's plenty of information in this thread to solve your problem... Not sure why you keep ignoring everyone's info about how to fix this?

Thanks for the reply - not sure what you think I am ignoring.

    - I've had the mechanic reset the warning lights with his computer - this has been done at least three times. As I understand it, this is the same thing as the paperclip trick.
    - I told the mechanic about the "holes lining up" - and he did this the second time he had it in the shop. This was in response to the post mentioning the "cup" before.

So what didn't I try? I am not mechanically gifted so I have to rely on talking to my mechanic

    Thanks,
    Rob

You should have asked the mechanic which exactly codes he reset which can give us a clue

Oh, didn't know you already tried those suggestions... The rubber boot idea sounds interesting, but hopefully someone who is more familiar than I can better explain it's function. Got a picture of it?

Its a cable about a foot long with a "gadget" at the end with rubber cover.

I ended up scheduling pep boys for tomorrow morning - want a second set of eyes to look at it. Kind of ticked off that it is going to cost me another $144 tho.

A great way to save money is to start with few basic stuff like this.
What exactly is this rubber boot? I have removed the suspension few times and there is nothing so differenet from any cars. The abs sonsor is held by 1 bolt . Many times this bolt is seized and brakes off so they might have done it and somehow to hold it back.. I dont know. Otherwise there is no boot that i can recall

The issue as I understand it is a dirty/damaged sensor. You said the hole is lined up the second time and the sensor cleaned. I am afraid in the wheel hub replacement process the sensor head was damaged by either incompatible fluid like brake cleaner or PB blast or even worse by a brash or other staff. Try a new sensor.

Yea... I like this line of thinking... Cancel your $144 appointment and take it back to guy who you paid to do the work and explain that the most logical thing is that sensor was damaged when he repaired it and that's his fault and he has to fix it!

    Another update.

Took the car to Pep Boys (PB). They checked it and wanted $1500 to fix. Basically most of the front drivers side being redone. Told PB that with Christmas coming, couldn't afford it. Guy took pity on me I guess and told me that this was the "PB corporate answer" and that he was sure the only thing wrong (off the record) is that it needed torqued down and that I needed a new castle nut and cotter pin. Learning this cost me $145.

Went back to my mechanic and told him all of this - he says PB doesn't know what to fix, so they are just going to replace everything. He took the advice of the PB guy and torqued the wheel again. I believe from 90lbs to 100lbs. Told me to come back on Monday if the ABS light comes back on.

And I screwed up before - it is not a "boot" but rather a CUP that he is referring to. He says it is for dust, but rather than the dust going out to nowhere, it is getting caught up near the sensor. His theory is that there is rust hitting the magnet sensor and setting off the ABS light and that this cup doesn't really do anything. Sorry for the confusion, but like I said before - I really don't know anything about cars.

My mechanic said that it is safe. When I drive it, it is smooth as glass. No vibration, nothing. Braking is great. If it weren't for the ABS light, I would think it was perfect.

I drive for lyft so I went out for a few hours - no ABS lights except at the end when I went over 60mph. For two hours I drove downtown Pittsburgh with no ABS light - on the way home hit 60+ mph and the light went on. This was yesterday.

Today I drove again for two hours and the same - no problem slower speeds, get on the highway at 60+ and the ABS goes off.

So this is driving me nuts.

    I found this document
    https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=2ahUKEwjT9uXZwIDmAhVCo1kKHVeIAekQFjAAegQIARAC&url=https%3A%2F%2Fattachments.priuschat.com%2Fattachment-files%2F2017%2F08%2F131028_Frontwheelhub.pdf&usg=AOvVaw3SI0aQJzhfZ6fXLVEv83bt

    and this link

SOLVED: Front axle nut torque specs for 07 prius - Fixya

That mentions some torque. Could the be that it is possibly under-torqued?

Once again thanks to everyone for helping on this and if you have any ideas please let me know. If this helps anyone else, that would be great.

What's the mechanics opinion about sensor damage? Either causing damage or recognizing that it's gone bad for other reasons?

I have had the castle nut, lose once because the Notch was not pressed in and this would pretty fast wear out and destroy the bearing but since it's torqued now on your car it shouldn't be the reason for the ABS light. If it was me I would disassemble the stuff and take out the axle inspect the splines for the ABS also the metal Cup and the sensor itself. Also I will put either a used working one either new one which is a little bit more money and see if it fixes it because this is dirt cheap. Wouldnt cost more than $40. Even if you claim you don't know anything about cars I would say from my experience that's how I was before and then gained some courage and started doing small stuff like this which totally help me buy a lot
    Good luck
