Happy new year to everyone :)
I went for an oil change and the shop mechanic said that tread on my rear breaks is 4mm and its close to yellow line and need to be replaced soon.

I was trying to search here and some topics said that tread should be 11mm while others claim that 4mm is tread of a new break(rear ones).

Could someone clarify if 4mm is the time to change rear breaks on 2nd Gen Prius?

Our 'advanced search feature' is working once again, thank you for using it before posting.

Brake Pad Thickness specs | PriusChat

In the above link, @ken1784 mentions 11mm for a new front pad, and 4mm for a new rear shoe.

You might also consider a new mechanic, unless the suggested work is costing you little or nothing.

Let us know if you need a recommendation for a local mechanic, or you can practice your search skills again.

I was confused because someone wrote that on the 3rd Gen. the new rear shoe is 11mm. But perhaps, its different than the 2nd Gen.
I've done a lot of work on the car recently. So, I don't really want to do something that is unnecessary.
I'll ask for a second opinion from different mechanic just to be on the safe side.
Thanks a lot for the comment!

Happy new year to you too!
The new pad thickness for the front brakes is 11 mm, and the minimum is 1 mm.

The new pad thickness on the rear shoes is 4 mm and the minimum is 1 mm.

I hope that confirms your research.

gen3 only came with front and rear pads, so 11mm would makes sense.

Of course this lead me to measure some cheapo Ctek shoes that were never installed, and it looks like 4mm. Hopefully you won't need to waste additional time and gas on another opinion over this particular issue.

Note: when using the "advanced search" feature, you can select which gen or subforum to search within, bypassing results for other models.
