Do you have any information about how Toyota selected the models and years that will be covered? Was it based on customer complaints or reports from dealers, or did they identify a specific deficiency in materials or process?

    Goofy-II's starboard quarter.

My second work Prius, and the second car with defective paint.
Ironically......the ONLY option "Big Bell" paid for was the paint.
While it's true that fleet vehicles are not pampered in the same way as some private cars are....it's ALSO true that the company Priuses are the only ones that suffer from this problem.
This is also a problem that is probably limited to 5-10 year old Yotas....(for now) meaning that even though it's CLEARLY a manufacturing issue, it's also one with limited warranty relief.

Big Bell's solution lately is to retire Yotas as they age out and buy Fords.

That I do not know. I did asked why the Prius was not covered and the rep give the run around something along the line of Prius are not affected ( It does!!!). I think in this case It have more to do with the Paint/Process that was defective and they exclude Prius because Prius owner don't press the issue to the dealer so that they can file a case on your behalf (They want to help you and build good will).

I think more people should step up and ask the dealer to file the case with Toyota so that they can add our car to the program.

You should raised your concern and mention it to the dealer the next time you get an oil changed. That way Toyota can add Prius to the support program. Or call the national owner hot line and tell them about your car peeling paint.

any Toyota Motor NA reps that lurk in the forum? any suggestions for execs/people at Toyota to target for complaints about this? I'm ready to send mine.

rejecting the Prius within this program is very obviously bullshit. my Blizzard Pearl is also peeling in several places, just like the RAV4s. paint is very flaky.

We haven’t seen @Prius Team in more than two years.
I can understand your frustration, but without more facts, I’m not sure I’d reach that conclusion. I wouldn’t assume that “Blizzard Pearl” was the same paint system for every model in every plant. If the problem was with a paint formulation that was used only on certain models, for example, then vehicles painted with other formulations wouldn’t be included, especially if Toyota’s supplier has agreed to cover some or all of the repair costs.

If you do write to Toyota—the address is on their Contact Us page—please consider sharing their reply.

My 2010 Prius had a busted back windshield. To keep water from getting in I duct-taped some visqueen over the rear windshield and 2 days later brought the car in to replace the windshield. When they removed the tape, the paint lifted right off of the car! This is ridiculous that they did not include Prius in the list of models qualifying for repair. This after I already painted the roof, side door and front windshield frame! 20200217_161040.jpeg 20200217_161031.jpeg 20200217_161026.jpeg

Duct tape vs paint- duct tape will win.

Good luck to that, we don't even say anything to Toyota about clogged EGR leading to blown headgaskets even after the TSB modified intake manifold was performed.

The one time I had paint lifting, it was a "brand-new" car that had sideswiped something in shipping, got a quicky repaint "at the port". Poor prep with the repaint you had done? I know, when it rains it pours...

Yeah the blizzard pearl debacle is not good. As @Grit says, Toyota's track record on addressing shortcomings isn't that hot these days. Not that the competitors are any better.

    Just a data point:
The Blizzard Pearl paint on my 2012 v looks pretty much new, everywhere. I'm in sunny CA (so sunny that other older cars tend to have their clearcoat damaged eventually), and the original owner garaged it for most of its life, though Sept 2019 when I got it.

I agree the preceding photos indicate a serious manufacturing problem, but my car does not seem to be affected.

You have a REAR windshield?????? :)
That's what duct tape does. NOT good for paint. Neither is brake fluid.
You should have used silicone between the body and glass. It will peal off easily and
not take the paint with it.
Have you gotten and estimate of what it will cost to repaint it?

You are right. That is ridiculous that the paint peeled off so easily.

Masking tape would hopefully not have caused that damage, but may not have been strong enough to hold the water barrier in place.

But on good paint, there is no way at all that duct tape should peel it off as easily as that stuff came off. Definite manufacturing defect.

Now whether Toyota should be liable for anything is a different question, but that paint job is defective.

It's not clear if that's factory paint that pealed off. Poster says he had some zones repainted.

Kind of a moot point though.

The panels around the rear glass were never repainted! That is factory paint that peeled off!

I called Toyota Customer Care and was told I need to call Toyota Corporate. This after my dealer telling me my VIN# was not included in the extended plan! So they include 6 or 7 models back to 2008 with blizzard pearl paint and don't include the Prius? Are you kidding me? Why? Is it because there are so many Prius owners that Toyota couldn't handle the volume? We need to be very loud and VERY vocal about this problem! I filed a Case and am taking my car into NY dealership so the dealership can document it.

I speculate that it may be because the Prius is manufactured in Japan, and the paint recall could be dependent on manufacturing defects at specific plants.
