CREEV mated to a Prius? Engineering question..

    I am not new to hybrid or electric vehicle technology but I do have a few engineering questions for anyone that could possibly answer any of them. I was wondering if anyone (read individual or company) has successfully been able to mate a Wankel style engine into a hybrid vehicle or into an electric vehicle to be used as a range extender type application. I am very interested in the science of this type of application if anyone has any information or article that are out there. Thanks!

    Not Wankel, but the BMW i3-REx has had a gasoline range extender for many years. @bwilson4web here has one.

    Yeah I've seen two of those up close. I work at Borg Warner as a Hybrid Test Technician and two of our engineers here at work have them. The BMW models run on the same concept as the Prius Prime. I was interested in an application that would use a more energy efficient power source to charge the batteries and run off of electricity using less fuel.

    Wankels aren't exactly known for efficiency and emissions. Their main benefit for a range extender is in NVH and taking up less space.

    Actually they do not. The engine in the Prime helps propel the vehicle. The small range extender engine in the BMW just runs a generator to add charge to the traction battery. At least up until recently it was the only range extended BEV in the US.
