2010 Prius’s mileage going South

    interesting. i wonder what higher octane accomplishes? i'll have to try a tank, i wonder if it would get me from the 60's into the 70's...

    I think it could be that the injectors are dirty/clogged. Not sure. But, I am glad this seems to work.

    While your at it, throw in some 0w-16 engine oil.

    A fluke. Either the previous fuel you had gotten was bad, and putting in good fuel diluted the bad,
    and now it's more burnable.

    Agreed with al you said. I have done exactly the some way you have done it. It took exactly same amount time. 25 min job.

    If someone has not done a lot of work on cars, it will take longer. And that's not a problem.
    As long as it's done right, and goes back together okay.

    Has anyone mentioned injector cleaner (gas tank additive). Look for one with recommendations and PEA.

    I got a concentrated bottle at Canadian tire a couple of years back, put in recommended amount when fuelling up, maybe every 6 months.

    I tried a bottle of Lucas high mileage fuel additive. Not much of a change.

    Maybe, I should pull the negative terminal off the 12 volt just to reset the ecu’s. I have a feeling that maybe that can help somewhat. Just for giggles.

    I had often wondered if maybe there is an increased drag in the engine from an a/c compressor needing more refrigerant oil (like pag or whatever they use now).

    We're all on the same page, that AC use (regardless of oil quanitity) impacts mpg?

    The compressor runs off the hybrid battery, not the engine. There would be no drag.

    Did a little reading. Decided only to let the dealer check the a/c. Found out that ND11 is the only oil that should be used. And due to the possibility of contamination from other a/c Service shop’s machines using different oils, the dealer, I think should be the one to check it. The compressor still may be pulling too many amps. But then I guess the fuse would blow. I’ll keep at it.

    If you're saying using AC in a Prius would have no impact on mpg, I'd argue that. It doesn't matter if it's Peter or Paul supplying the electrons for the compressor, it will impose a mpg penalty.

    Still mpg at initial post was high 30's for two tanks, but is now back in the 40's? With higher octane gas?

    I'd still think with 170k miles just clean the intake and EGR asap.
