I have a 2006 in my driveway with 349k miles. I'm currently driving a 2007 with 196k, my son's 2005 has 216k, my previous 2005 that was sold to my sons best friend has 299,999+. The baby of the group has 133k miles and feels new, lol.

And they all drive great. I'm a DIY kinds guy and have the tools, equipment and manuals needed to maintain the cars. That can make a big difference, but I've been fortunate. They are reliable and rarely need any work.

 

All you need to do is go to the DMV and report the false odometer reading. Once they take notice then you have something to use in court to get compensation.

That stinks, I hope at least the original CM (combination meter) failed and it had to be replaced.

Possibly. Check:

• Wire harness or connector to the switch
• P position switch itself.

If those check out it could be a fault in the HV control ECU but before rushing into replacing that, work through the inspection procedure for the fault.

Get a small claims complaint for your local jurisdiction. Fillout the complaint and demand that the seller reimburse you for all your costs including: purchase price, sales tax, title fee, registration fee. Obviously, briefly explain that due to the fraud that you want your money back and return car to seller. File the complaint with the court.

PS Also get form from your local police for citizens complaint for automotive odometer fraud (in some jurisdications this may be handled by the DMV). Complete the criminal complaint form but DO NOT file it yet. Instead, present this document when you are asked to mediate when the court case is being litigated as one more issue on the table to be resolved. Your POV should be: the two of you have multiple issues civil and criminal which all need to be resolved at the same time.

PPS NEVER say to seller that he is going to jail (or that you are going file a criminal complaint) unless he gives you your money back (a quid-pro-quo). The quid-pro-quo element can get YOU a charge of extortion (a very serious criminal charge). Instead, your POV is the two of you (Buyer and Seller) have multiple issues civil and criminal which all need to be resolved at the same time.

 

yeah that's the big drawback for the combo meter replacement to used car buyer. You can buy an instrument cluster for $100 that has any mileage you want on it. I bought one that was significantly lower mileage then what the car really has.

If I were to buy a used G2 and the mileage smells fishy I would check the dash board screws that you need to remove and replace the combo meter and see if they are loose or missing (all screws in a factory toyota are usually very tight) that would make me suspicious then i would join toyota.com/owners forum and join that forum with that cars vin (on your insurance card) and see every time it saw a dealer for any kind of service and what the mileage was at that time.

Carfax would help too.

I initially used Mobil 1 in 5W-30. The last several oil changes I used NAPA full synthetic 5W-30 and I currently have (5) 5 quart jugs of Super Tech full synthetic 5W-30 sitting on the shelf that I'll be using in my (very soon) upcoming oil changes. None of these oils have been the high mileage variety. Although I have never looked into it myself, I have read in many discussions that the high mileage oils have additional chemicals to make seals swell to reduce leakage. It was also discussed that once you go HM, you should never go back, as it will cause more leaks to appear. None of my cars currently have any leaks, so I've decided to stay away from the HM oil.

 

And that was entirely your fault. You pretty much got what you deserved by not being careful. Don't beat yourself up about it, I hear it happens all the time with Craiglist buyers. A Carfax report would have told you the mileage of each smog check in California. Guess 99 dollars for 6 Carfax reports was too much for you.
