Why don't you like the large format screen in the Prime?

Yes, but you can't totally quiet the Bosch dish washer beeping when finished.

My contribution to dumb and unnecessary annoyances:
The microwave at our office beeps six times when it's done. If you open the door before it's done, the magnetron stops, so it obviously knows when the door is open. But! If you let it finish before opening the door, the beeping continues even after you open the door. Why is it telling me, "Hey, I'm done," when it's obvious that I know it's done? If it can stop the magnetron when the door opens, can't it stop the beeper when the door opens?

And then there are other microwaves that you have to tell it you're going to use it for its main purpose (cooking) before you can enter the time you want it to cook. How about if we tell it when we DON'T want to cook, but just want to set a timer?

Ouch! That sounds like a bad wiring job. I had a refrigerator like that. It had a hot frame because whoever wired the outlet had the hot and neutral backwards. Another fridge really nailed me once because the incoming power wasn't bonded. The hot was 50 volts and the neutral was 70 volts. Both were shocking surprises!!

Some wire or connection had grounded out in the oven. It was around 30 years old at that point.

We just got a new washer, updated version of our previous, and yeah, some extra "features". Lot's of beeps and chimes, and it took an obscure chicken-dance, multiple push-and-hold of buttons to quell them. Another charming feature: you can't open the lid once it's going (it locks), nor lift the lid even while it's filling (messes up the cycle you've chosen). Seems like you're forced to dump dry detergent on to the clothes prior to filling. I will research more...

Clearly I'm a luddite here but the whole "screen size race" reminds me of the Mhz race in computers in the 2000s. Then, with the release of Core processors suddenly it no longer mattered. That's because the Mhz of the processor is independent of the speed of the computer. Same with screens, there is this giant race to have bigger screens, mostly pushed by reviewers. What isn't talked about is the atrocious software. When the BEST you can do is mirror your phone it is a fail so hard you should be firing your entire software team. Etune is awful but no more awful than all the rest. Convoluted layering, menus, sizing, it's ALL just terrible. I refused to get the Advanced or Premium when I got my Prime just because of the screen. Not that the rest of the controls are winners. The HVAC controls from a 1977 Corolla are better than what we get in the Prime. Why, oh why, is there a separate fan off button? And it's not even an On/Off button. So if you have the fan at, say, 4, and you turn it off you have to hit that stupid rocker switch 4 times to get it back to 4. The 77 Corolla has a knob. It includes off.

That’s my lament as well; I’d be all over controls where you can easily adjust everything, without taking your eyes off the road. Like any old 80’s econobox used to do.

I worked a job one time, talking with a guy about all the screw ups that had happened, and he said “we’re going backwards”. That was heady: you come in, do your hours, and the end is further?

It’s true though. Just cus you can take all the HVAC controls and relegate them to touch screen (or indistinguishable little buttons, just as bad), doesn’t mean you should do it.

Why play with the fan? Mine is set to Auto and beside raising or lowering by a degree or so, I don't touch it.

I haven't seen it necessary here. The fan adjust its speed automatically to my liking. Mind you, we don't get +40C here and I precool the car before getting in.

Because sometimes I want more or less air. Or I want it coming from different vents for a variety of reasons. Why question WHY I want to change the fan speed instead of not breaking what was a simple UI. Literally ZERO reason to change to that convoluted mess that is the HVAC controls now. Personally I don't like the Auto setting because just like so many other things a computer has NO IDEA how hot or cold I am and how I want the HVAC to compensate for it.

That's what I meant by adjusting the temperature by a degree or so. The fan will kick up or down accordingly.

I have the small display so a button for the fan. I don't know what the UI control looks like for the big display. In my Model 3, which also has the fan speed adjusted using the screen (which I never use either), they added a new option a few weeks ago through OTA update that allows the fan to be controlled by the left scroll wheel on the steering wheel.

I whish more manufacturers would implement OTA update so your vehicle isn't locked to the way it was when you bought it but evolve over time.

We occasionally go down a steep hill to a coastal highway, and rainy nights the windshield starts fogging up, quickly. I’d like to easily set vent mode to direct all the air to windshield. Toyota in their wisdom doesn’t offer that in their regular* mode options, so I’m aiming for the next best, where air is directed to windshield and feet.

So, driving along a twisty highway, dark night, eyes off the road to find vent mode button (in a row of identical buttons), push that button, decipher the tiny LED image displayed above button, process if it’s the correct vent mode, if not repeat process till success. Go too fast you go by it, and need to start again.

Did I mention this is nighttime, raining, twisty road…

    * there is a one-button push that’ll invoke front windshield defrost mode, puts vents and AC on full blast, but that is not a regular vent mode, total overkill, and not for protracted use.

I just checked and indeed. You can't manually direct air only toward the windshield unless you select Defrost. Never had a car (first Toyota too) that did that. I guess Toyota has never heard of defogging.

Here’s one example where I’d say they got it right. It’s a recent, lower level Honda Fit. The upper levels “upgrade” to a touch screen. The last few years, before they discontinued the Fit in North America, I believe all level had gone to touch screen.

That looks like a manual temperature control. I hate those. You forget about the settings until you feel too hot/cold. Then you move it in the opposite direction and the process starts over.

Living in the rainy coast, surprisingly, it's not as often as one thinks that I need defogging. Maybe it's different else where but in AUTO mode, it usually doesn't fog up in the first place.

Glad to see this. I know it has a sensor on the inside of the windshield just for that and from what you say, it seems to be doing its job.
