All my Prius are running on home-made 12V Lithium, using a $5 Harbor Freight ammo case, they have been in the car for 3 years and still running like new, maybe I should have a DIY session, for me this is A-MUST for all Prius.

Beyond excited for this project. My Ford C-Max just hit 167k today. The lithium back is working great at almost 8 years old.

I think a aftermarket lithium hybrid battery could breath new life into a old worn out Prius. Making it better than new in some ways! :)

That's what I figured, I have been helping this made in China NiMH battery factory for years, we communicate over WeChat and I've even tried to visit them in China without luck, obliviously they don't want to get sued by no one. Their battery still at Gen1~Gen2 quality in terms of internal resistance, voltage spike crazy compare to stock, and degradation is also another problem, 3 years and I am seeing half capacity... They came out with a newer version and have me tested, it's better but it is HEAVY as hell !!

"it's better but it is HEAVY as .."Then how can it be better?
Extra weight, needs more power to move.
It should weigh less, with more power.

You can just get a 2nd Prius pack and run it in parallel to the original, giving it
    twice the power.

IR is better but much heavier, feels like they put a lot more material in there to reduce the resistance, I will snap a picture when I dissect the battery.

UNLESS, it heavier with a LOT more power, to override the extra weight, AND give a longer
driving distance on the battery, and better charging/discharging rate, and at LEAST last as long,
or better is longer life than original, for the same or less cost, it doesn't seem to be worth it.

I don't see a reason for getting it if it is not better than what is already out there, for equal or lower cost.

the good news is that the longer this takes, the cheaper the batteries get.

and there are still tons of early gen2's with original batteries that will need replacing someday.

oem nimh are unlikely to drop much below todays prices, and only some parts of the country are seeing them down near $1,600.
plus, worldwide sles would be incredible

I believe he is talking about batteries from http://www.newpriusbatteries.com/

His batteries are from China but he claims that they are higher quality that other Chinese batteries

Here is a long thread about them: Prius Battery Replacement (GenII) Like you've never seen - NEW Cylindrical Cells | PriusChat

How about an estimate on when that might happen.

Not everything made in china is junk. A lot Apple products are made there. But they have
stricter guide lines for how things are build. And then the cheaper china copies are junk!
They use inferior components and are put together cheaply.
You just have to be careful from where in china you get it.

Good to hear! A new thread on how you did the 12v lithium would be amazing, if not its enough just knowing that it works for me to give it a go

I wonder how a Lithium 12V would fare when a Prius Dweller wants to connect their 1K inverter to it?

If you hook up a 1000watt inverter, most of the juice actually come straight from the traction battery through car inverter.

Awesome, thanks for sharing, it's nice to see some close ups of how these packs are going to look! So exciting! Let me know if there's any way I can help?
