How much did Prime owners pay for their Prime?

    Toyotas MSRP starts at $27,100, we all know you don't pay MSRP but I am curious to find out how much you can bring down the price on a Prime by negotiating. Assuming you use all the tricks in the book such as visiting the dealership near the end of the month to possibly catch them in need to sell a few more cars to reach their monthly quota, etc.

    I went to visit a dealership last time and I got the manager to bring down the price $3,000 on a 2017 Prius he was very motivated to get me to sing the papers right there and then. However, I did not do it.

    Lets say when I visit my dealership the Prime is going for $26,000, how likely am I to be able to get the price down to ~$24,000 give or take.

    How much have you Prime owners paid and what negotiating techniques would you recommend?

    Good luck. You're in LA, so you have an advantage as there are quite a few dealers willing to stock the car, and lots of Primes in stock it seems. You also have cash back deals in place too*. DO watch for dealers adding crap like VINetch, Fabric treatment, bumper appliques, illuminated door sills, etc. They might not tell you that when you're about to make a deal. East and west coasts seem to have these cars in inventory where most of the flyover states have next to none, have had next to none, and will probably have next to none going forward. Dealers don't want to sell these around here, even when they get much more than list. They actually hate Primes. Discounts on a usual basis aren't happening, AFAIK, except around where you are.

    The discounts aren’t like they are in the east coast. But definitely shop around and ask for quotes. I don’t think it’s impossible to get at least $1000 off msrp, still have a good APR, and $1000 manufacturer rebate.

    Use the Costco discount. I got $1,018 off the MSRP. Then bought the car in Upstate NY for the $2,500 discount. Then in Colorado you have a $5,000 tax CREDIT and then the Fed tax incentive of $4,500.

    I had to pay full MSRP here in South Carolina -- no way around it, so just consider yourself lucky to live in CA!

    I'm liking these 2020 Prius Primes with $4500 factory cash back. I'm looking at an LE with MSRP of $29,114 - $4500 = $24,614.

    But I also want them to throw in Toyota 0% financing - and I'm willing to go short term - 36mo or 48mo. Even at $24,614 (after $4500 factory cash back), there's still $1800 worth of gross profit for the dealership, because it's still an MSRP deal for the dealership . And $1800 is more than the cost of 0% financing, even for 60 months. Problem is light inventory.

    you should be able to get one close to 20k, and finance through a credit union or other low interest institution.

    These NH dealerships are tight. If I could find a dealership willing to sell me a 2020 Prime LE for $22,000, I'd pay cash for it and even pay them a $400 doc fee. Maybe I should try Massachusetts.

    Do you live in MA? They don't issue a temp license plate for out of state purchases, makes it rather difficult.

    Read this thread to get an idea of what the true cost of PRIUS PRIME. $22K OTD price on LE is very doable. But, yeah, the inventory is getting low on the 2020 models. The 2021 models are coming very soon.

    Update.....I shopped for two 2020 Prii Primes today in New Hampshire. I worked on 2 separate vehicles at 2 separate dealerships.

    2020 Prius Prime XLE - MSRP 31,564. They let me walk at $27,000. My offer was $25,000 cash. So basically they wanted an MSRP deal after getting $4500 cash back from Toyota. I was happy to talk away from this deal.

    2020 Prius Prime LE - MSRP $29,114. They let me walk at $24,000. My offer was $23,000. This deal was a little better. They deducted the $4500 factory cash from MSRP and also gave me an additional $614 in discount.

    Both dealerships claimed to only have about $800 in gross profit in both vehicles. I don't believe them. They are low on inventory and are just holding out for more gross profit.

    I'll hang in there and try again tomorrow morning on the phone, and do some comparison shopping. One of the LE's I looked at had a bunch of chewed insulation and mouse poop laying next to a spark plug harness. White fluffy material with bits of black. The salesman sniffed the material and said it didn't smell like mice. This is what my life has come to.

    you guys are lucky, in hawaii we have a monopolized toyota dealership so we can't get the toyota discounts.

    I caved. I ended up buying the 2020 Prius Prime LE for $24,000. The sticker price on the one I bought was $29,239. I'm sure I could have held out for a better price, but I was getting tired of fighting. And nervous about inventory. In my area the dealerships were pushing back pretty hard in light of the $4500 rebate from Toyota and I was starting to feel like waiting for a 2021.

    Next time don’t tell them you are buying cash. They won’t be willing to give you a deal because they know they are not going to make money in financing.

    Instead focus on each piece separately. Negotiate the price of the vehicle. Let them believe that you are going to take a loan on the car.

    Once you have the price on the car if you have a trade work on that and again let them think they are going to get you in the finance department setting up the loan to make money.

    Then once you have the deal in writing go to the finance department and drop the hammer. That is when you mention cash because it is too late to squirm out of the deal. You can always soothe the dealership by mentioning dealer servicing for the vehicle.

    That said I wouldn’t expect much off beyond the deals that Toyota are offering at the time. When I got mine in Texas there was a handful in the entire state. I lucked out that a dealership had exactly the one I wanted. They also knew that they where the only one that had it and the other dealers did not want to place an order for a Prime. So I got add ons for the same price not a discount. Near limo tint, a clear bra in the front, and some swag.
