I have messed up piston rings and my car burns oil. I don't know what the oil type is supposed to be, but my mechanic is telling me to buy 5W40. I believe it's because he thinks a thicker oil is necessary to preserve engine life. Is this safe?

The thicker oil is actually recommended to slow the burn rate. A thinner oil will allow you to get better gas mileage because there is less friction on the pistons as they move up and down, and it is better for cold weather starts because it can spread itself better over your metal parts to preserve engine life. In your climate, I think you will be fine with a thicker oil.
