Check Hybrid System alert after hard acceleration

You were in limp home mode because of one of several issues.

Usually caused by a significant failure. I would go to your local hybrid shop. They will give you the best value options for the repair, which is where the real money is needed. In a 2010 there are many common hybrid problems, none of which get fixed with a diagnostic tool. For example, hybrid battery, brake booster system, electric water pumps or inverter failures.

The one thing you can do first is take the 12v battery to an auto supply and have it load tested. If bad, replace it and then see if some of the computers work better.

 

Your the second person to post this exact incident. The 1st person who did this, their inverter blew up and Toyota covered it under warranty. One of the best Prius scams on the forum!

 

Kind of like saying the Brake Booster will go out if you slam on the brakes. I know my inverter failed after I parked at a restaurant. No hard acceleration, no lights until it would not Ready an hour later. The car was completely dead 90 miles from home on a Sunday evening. The Brake Booster failure at least had warning signals as the Pump ran excessively.

 

If you want to get info without spending much money, get an OBDII adapter and run the Dr Prius app. It will give you most codes and tell you about hybrid battery health.

If the 12v battery is original, it has lasted more than most, can can cause multiple warning lights to go on, should be replaced. Disconnecting and then reconnecting the 12v will probably take you out of limp mode but could clear the codes that you probably would like to know about.

 

Toyota did a software update recall, so that a sudden/hard acceleration demand is “buffered”. Post update you still get the acceleration but it happens slightly more gradually. This was to protect some soldered connections in the inverter.

This happened in March 2014. My letter (from Toyota Canada) has the ID: SOSH-230-1A.

For starters maybe check if yours had the update; dealership should be able to check when provided your VIN?

Just had the same issue with my 2010 prius w/60,000 miles.

Hard acceleration and the check hybrid system light came on with almost no power. My mechanic suggested I take it to Toyota.

Any advice is appreciated. I'll update on the diagnosis.

That should be covered under the extended inverter warranty.

 

I haven't had the inverter update. I hope that's the issue and it's under warranty. I have a 2010 prius with 60k miles, never had any issues other than oil changes, brakes, tires. .

 

I just heard back from Toyota, it's the IPM inverter, covered under warranty.

Message to other prius owners who haven't had the update, do not put the petal to the metal.

 

And get the update?
