    Dear Prius Gurus

I lost one of my Prius Keys a few years back and have been down to one key for a while.

Recently I thought I had lost it and was looking at a huge bill to have a new one programmed.

After finding it I decided to buy 2 programmable keys off of amazon.

A while ago I received a key from a generous individual on this site but was unable to make the chicken dance set it up for allowing my car to power on. The light would blink showing it was being programmed but after a minute would go to slow blinking instead of going black. Needless to say the key was never usable as an ignition key. (I thought the problem was that it was a previously used key)
However, when my new keys came I experienced the same issue. The programming light would eventually go to a steady slow blink (not going out) and the keys would not be programmed.

I assume that somehow in the pas of this car multiple keys had been added and that the car is now at its limit of keys.

Does this sound like a right diagnosis? and if it is How do I reset all the key bindings and start over with my working key so I can reprogram the others?

Thank you all for your wisdom and help.

P.s I also have a laptop with the service software installed so if there is an easier way of accomplishing this through that instead of a modified chicken dance I am willing to try there as well

    Thanks again

Thank you so much for this walk through
I will be testing it tomorrow, and letting you know

Do you know if this works with more than the door lock?
    I alos
    First off
Thank you so much for this link

I setup my tech stream and got to this place, I identified that only 2 keys were registered and that 2 more could be.

however, every time I tried to execute the erasure or addition of new keys the system would say there is some sort of disconnect with the car and to reconnect and try again.

I tried multiple times and connection and had the same result

I then tested to see if I actually had connections to the car as I had to put in the model, year and make when starting TIS.
I was able to change and test many settings including the customization settings like turning on and off the ability to remotely lock and unlock the doors, turning on the lights, locking and unlocking the doors using software, etc.

I then went into the trouble tickets and saw a previous error of B2795 Which was only a previous error and not one active at the time of scan (see issues)

I also tried working with transponder code erasure and registering (see pictures). All of these resulted in the same DID NOT WORK or LOST CONNECTION errors.

I also tried multiple times to follow the instructions that came with my new keys (See attached PDF's)

Any Idea where to go from here?
I am confused at the results I am getting and where the problem could be.

Thanks again for your wisdom and help

Your lost connection may have to do with the VCI cable you are using. Some of them don't seem to work with some functions. As far as finding the right one without spending a fortune...I don't know. Many Amazon reviews have been manipulated, and are unreliable.

Thank you for your response. I find it interesting that I only have problems with the key section of TIS.
It seems to work well for both my Lexus and my Prius in setting every other setting. But maybe I'm mistaken on how it works.

Could there be something wrong with my security module the key module on my prius?
I don't know why the chicken dance isn't working on my Prius for my new keys
(IE goes to a slow blinking eventually and not black)

Any idea why nothing I do For key coating seems to work with their without software?

Thanks again everyone for your input and wisdom.

Are you sure that they are the right keys for the correct model of your car? They are not universal.

The regular chicken dance sequence did not work for my generic new key either. I found a sequence that was slightly different for the last part of it where you push the buttons on the remotes.

I was unaware that your techstream setup was fully functional for everything else because that information wasn't there, so I thought that might be the issue. Some functions on my setup work perfectly and other times it exits.

Thank you for asking. I am pretty sure they are.

    Here is what I bought.
    2 Replacement Remote Key Fob for 2004 2005 2006 2007 2008 2009 Toyota Prius | eBay

My car is a 2005 without smart key.

They key that the other user on these forums gave me was also a standard 2005 key So I think things are in line there. But just cant figure out why none of the key related things work and the security light goes to slow blink instead of going dark when doing the chicken dance

Do you have a write up or link to that sequence? I'd love to give it a try

Yeah the only weird thing about my tech stream setup is that I have to put in the vehicle data at the beginning (ill check my Lexus and see if that has the same requirements or if it is a problem with my Prius alone)

and the inability to do the key stuff.
Everything (I think) seems to be working well. Testing all modules, trouble codes, erasing codes, all the customization. etc.

One thing I did notice however, is that my car never makes a noise when I lock it. and I saw a setting in there about beeps and the like in the BODY customization settings.
Maybe Ill look at these again. maybe there really is something wrong with my security module (Or whatever the heck runs the keys and codes)

If you have any other thoughts please feel free to throw them my way.

I would love to finally get more than one key on this car LOL.

I was trying many things so I just took a picture of the screen and I have no link. It goes like:

When you get to add mode, after flapping the door and pulling the key out of the slot:
1.Press lock and unlock on the old fob for 1.5 sec.
    2. Press lock and unlock on new fob for 1.5 sec
3.Press lock and unlock on new fob for 1.5 sec a second time
    4. Press lock and unlock only on the new fob.

This worked for me but the other sequence did not work for whatever reason.

An extra key is pretty important since this is the worst Toyota smart key system for many reasons and it is a hassle and expensive if you lose your last key.

My lock button on the only fob I had was not working meaning I could not even program a new one. I sprayed it out with contact cleaner and got it to work. A replacement generic key was $55 and I had the metal key copied for $5. I don't really want to push my luck by attempting techstream key programming with this car.

Here is a quote from my original post when I made two new keys with techstream using that video:
"The only slight anomaly is that it tells you to press the lock and unlock buttons simultaneously for one second but that doesn't work. You have to do it for three seconds. It took me a while to suss that out."
Don't know if that will help.

Thank you so much for posting this and your time to write it all out.
Just to clairify is this to allow the key to start the car or for it to be able to lock and unlock the doors?

My primary need is to make a Key start the car. Luckily I have a plethora of classic cut keys to get in but only one fob with witch to drive the car.

Either way it would be nice to have the key also unlock the car so If that is what this process is for I will also try when I find a way to get my keys set up for driving.

Ok, those steps are for lock and unlock after getting it into add mode. The video I linked below has the procedures for adding the key and adding lock and unlock. The steps I posted are a bit different for the lock and unlock part of this in the second half of the video.

Anyhow, if that was confusing the video has 2 parts, 1 is adding the key to start the car and 2 is making the fob work to lock and unlock.

    Thank you so much

Yeah I recently found this video. (I thought is was well done and informative)

However after opening closing the door 6 times and putting in the new key (about 58 secs in the video) my light does not go out it only begins to blink slowly. (not the fast and different blinking of the programming mode, which lasted for about a minute)

I will have to check again as I noticed that his car beeped twice after removing the old key (48 seconds in the video)
I don't know if that ever happened on mine.

It is fully baffling to me what could be going on.

Has anyone ever heard of a security module dying on a Prius?

Thanks again all for your brain storming and ideas.

I confirmed that during the key coding sequence my turn signals do not blink and there is no beep from the dashboard that was present in the video above.

Here is a video of what I am experiencing when trying to code keys to start my car.
Would love any feedback about why I might be experiencing this issue.

Here is what I get when I try going through that video.
Any feedback from you or other key gurus would be appreciated
