Prime "bounces" back after applying parking brakes and letting go of brake pedal?

It is normal in a Prius. The P button. I serts. A parking pass into the years, it has a bit of wiggle room before it stops the next year tooth.

P drives a pawl into the gears so they can't roll, but it can take some rolling to settle into a low spot in the gears. Ideally I linked a picture in the previous post.

 

If you set the parking brake first, as Toyota instructs (see “Parking the vehicle,” Owner’s Manual (PDF), page 315), you also won’t notice this behavior, which as @JimboPalmer kindly notes, is normal.

That’s a good habit to get into, anyway, just in case there’s ever a malfunction in the system that engages the parking pawl. There’s supposed to be a warning message on the multi-information display if that happens, but you might not notice it before releasing the brake pedal, which could allow the car to roll away.

 

Ideally, a simple proof read of your post BEFORE hitting the "Post Reply" button would have been nice too.

 

Sort of related. Anyone notice when you go into reverse quickly, and then hit the brake and stop short before shifting back into drive to go forward (like making a quick K turn with vehicles in the street waiting) you hear a minor clunk from the rear? Mine has always done this since I've had it

 

Not under those specific circumstances.
But my C has developed a mild "clunk, clunk, clunk" almost every time that I come to a stop and the engine shuts off.
It sounds like an exhaust pipe hitting on the frame or on a shield.
Gonna have it inspected at the next service......unless it gets louder.

 

One thing I've heard the Car Care Nut (YouTube Toyota Master Tech) mention when parking is to shift into neutral, apply the parking brake, release the normal brake pedal, allow the car to settle, then shift it in park. He mentioned the parking pawl is fairly pricy to replace, and following this method places less stress on it.

 

That's nearly the advice you find on page 321 of your owner's manual, except for a slight change in the order. Toyota would like you to keep your foot on the normal brake pedal throughout, and only slowly release that after both the parking brake and the parking pawl have been set. That's the typical recommended order.



The parking pawl would indeed be pricey to replace, as you have to disassemble the transmission to get to it.

That said, I have never heard of parking pawl breakage being a common problem, no matter what order of steps people use when parking. It would probably require a force more like being rear-ended while parked for breakage of the pawl to be a concern.

 

^ Wow. So Toyota is saying to press the parking brake with your left foot down before actually shifting to Park? Or do the older models have a hand brake. I always prefer the hand brake, I have one in my '20 MX-5 (and Mazda continues to use them even in the coming 2022 model) - but no car is ever perfect so I deal with the dopey left foot e-brake.

 

For the math-inclined, what's going is is there is a "partial order" of the steps, but in order to typeset a list of steps in a manual, they have to pick a "total order". There's really no particular significance to whether you apply the parking brake first or shift to P first (or even just power the car off, which shifts to P for you), or even do both of those at the same time, as long as both of those steps precede taking your right foot off the normal brake pedal; that's how you can minimize any rolling or bouncing of the car.
