Gen 4 to Gen 3, what you need to know

    1. not subject to the gen. 3 head gasket issues
    2. $500-$1000 cheaper than a gen 3 used engine with similar mileage, (supply and demand: the need for engines is greater the older the car)

    Maybe yes, maybe no: if you retain 3rd gen EGR (safest bet), and IF clogging EGR is a factor in the head gasket failures, then that may still be an issue. Just keep on top of EGR cleaning.

    Whats the difference between a short block and a standard block ? And you can reuse a standard head with a short block? On that note could I use a standard gen 3 head on a gen 4 block? Or are they too different? I thought I saw the water jackets are different, if so which head gasket should you use gen3 or 4??

    A short block just means everything but the cylinder head, everything below the head gasket. It's an odd expression, but it's well-known. Doesn't mean it's height is less somehow. If your pistons or crankshaft is toast for example, you can just get a new short block, assemble with your current head.
