2016 Brake Fluid Flush w/o Techstream?

Ideally you want to leave the level as you found it.

The car rolled off the factory floor with new brake pads, and the level at the full line. As the pads wear the pistons move out, and level drops. It tends to be near the low line when the pads are near the service limit (1mm).

There's no harm in topping it up to full line, but down the road if putting new pads in, when you push the pistons back (to clear new pads), you'll need to keep an eye on the reservoir, it might overflow.

I got involved in my own brakes around 2002 when I took a hand-me-down car my Father-in-law gave to us (92 Subaru) to a local Brakes Plus to fix the squeaky brakes. Idiots charged me, probably, 3 times too much and I had to take it back a number of times because they left air in the brakes and it would pull hard when using them. I worked with a guy who did his own and he taught me when he did my Tacoma...it's really not that difficult and, now, there are tons of folks on YouTube who teach so many car repairs. The hardest part about car repair is when things go wonky and you encounter problems you've never seen before. (Like a bolt that breaks or something so rusty you can't get it out, etc.) It's good have friends you can call when you get in a pinch!

 

I tried this today with our 2019 Prius (standard model, Gen 4). Followed the non-techstream procedure to the letter, or believe I did. Within one minute turned on power while p.brake was on, shifted to N (which requires depressing brake), pumped over >8 times in under 5 sec., pushed the park button and pumped brake >8 times rapidly (usually 9-10), back to N and >8 pumps again, returned to P. Repeated a number of times, including from the car off, the yellow brake (!) light never flashed, though it does illuminate briefly when the car is first turned on. When the car first turns on it tells me service is due (the usual 5Kmi. notice), sometimes I canceled this with the return button before all the pumping. My wife double checked as i was doing it, wondered whether I was pumping too fast. Any ideas?

 

I have a 2019 and the procedure you write seemed to work for mine, the brake light keeps flashing after that. You are in ignition on and not ready mode, correct? Hit the start button twice without foot on the brake pedal initially to be in the ignition on…

You have to put something, once you’ve posted, so maybe just the word “deleted”?

then if you really want it gone use the report button, ask moderator to delete it, but it doesn’t hurt to just leave it, saves him work.
