I have a 2017 Prius Prime that up until now didn't need new tires. I now need to purchase some and I have read what everybody also mentioned on this site but am still confused. I live in NJ so I need something that can handle snow and rain but that the snow part isn't that big a deal since I'm a senior and don't like to travel in snowy weather. I don't really care about the noise but want safe in wet weather (rain) and try not to lose too much in mileage...right now I get during the warm weather about 31-33 miles on electric. Winter about 28. What would everyone suggest? I am looking at the Yokohama Avid Ascend GT All Season. Has anyone have any experience with Firestone Weathergrip? Or is there something better? I would appreciate any ideas...thanks.

My Outback came with Avids. Can't say if they are the exact same model you listed here, nor give a detailed review, as I have only had the car for maybe two months, though no complaints. I have considered Avids as replacement tires for other cars in the past. Usually ended up with some type of Hankook Kinergy because of price. I did have the ABS activate on dry pavement with them on the Sonic, and they were OEM to the car, but then I run tire pressures higher. Otherwise no complaints on wet roads. Issues in snow had more to do with the car's traction control.

I have a 2017 and put on Michelin Defender all season tires. Been very happy with them.

I put some Michelin CrossClimate tires on mine.

It's an "all weather" tire..essentially an all season tire that's rated for snow...has the mountain snowflake symbol on it.

Not as good as a dedicated winter tire, but better than a traditional all season.

Pretty pleased with them. Have used them for 2 winters and have nearly 50k KM on them

@jerrymildred is using Yoko Avid Ascend (not sure if it is GT or other iterations of Avid) and he is very happy with the results he has been getting on his PP. I have not used Yoko on my PP, but had an older Avid Ascend model BlueEarth LRR tire on my HCH and was very happy with it. Yokohama makes Avid Ascend in both GT and LX. According to the Yokohama website, both GT and LX have similar characteristics. I believe in general LX is less expensive. I once was about to buy LX for my 2017 PP, but it was cheaper to trade it in for a 2020 PP, so I did not buy new tires for it. So far, I have only had OEM tires on all three PPs. Did you lose a lot of electric miles with them? I know I'll lose some but don't want to take a big hit.

Do you lose a lot of electric miles with the Defenders...I heard that they take a big hit and even though I know that I will lose some miles when the tire is new, I don't want to lose a lot.

Mine are the GTs. I put them on at 24,803 miles. Car is now at 63,999. Tread depth varies from 6/32 to 7/32 (started new at 12/32). We drove in the rain last night and it still has great wet grip. They are at least as quiet as the original tires.

    You're in Southern NJ.
Imho, below I-195 in NJ, there are likely "fewer winter snow storm travel impacts".
Still, if someone has to go to work, or go somewhere when there is a snow storm, I recommend that they use Blizzak snow tires for the possible snow season.

You also mentioned that travel during snow storms is not a major concern.
    Imho, that's important. :)

Therefore, I suggest getting the same tires that are the OEM tires on many Rav4 Hybrids.

    The Michelin Primacy A/S.
It seems like these are Michelin's replacement for their previous offered Energy Saver tires. Their previous Energy Saver tires where often at/near the top is gas mileage performance.

    At Tire Rack:
(Tire Rack has many affiliated tire shops all around the country. They can ship the tires to that location, or to your local garage/mechanic. I have Tire Rack ship to a local garage, I notify the garage first and get the okay. After the tires arrive, I'll drop off the car, or bring them 2 tires at a time. I've been doing that for decades. :))

    There are trade-offs for tires.
The Michelin Primacy A/S tires are good in smaller snow storms, and semi-slick (semi-icy) roads. And, get great Hybrid/PHV/EV gas mileage.

The Michelin Defender tires would better in adverse weather conditions. However, with a slight MPG/ev-range reduction.

For ice, heavy snow, or the !Zombie Apocalypse!, I'll take my Blizzak snow tires over even the Nokian winter tires. (y)

For a sports car, for ultimate performance in a "street-able" Summer-Only tire, I still like Bridgestone's Potenza series tires:
Bridgestone Potenza S-02 ; Max Performance Summer UTQG: 140 (those tires last only ~10K miles).

If specific characteristics are more important, as expected, there are trade-offs in tire selection. :)

    Good Luck!

I'm in NJ too. I use Nokian WR G4 tires. After initial break in and warmer months, I'm getting what I used to get on my stock Dunlop Enasave tires (Non-prime). It's an all weather, LRR tire and it's been great. Installed in November 2021 and I've already put 12k miles on them and they still look new. The ride is super comfortable even at 42/41 psi. Even on coilovers. I was looking at the Michelin CrossClimates but I didn't see any mention of low rolling resistance so went with the Nokians. Not sure if Michelin Primacy A/S are the same as Primacy MXM4, but I got the latter in 215/45R17, and coming from OEM Pilot HX MXM4, my mpg TANKED. Slowly coming back, but I don’t see them being anywhere near Energy Saver A/S. You have to take rolling resistance with a tablespoon or two of salt.

my fuelly badge used to read 4.9. At 5.0 now, and I can see 5.1 coming. No big deal when you’re doing a half tank every 2~3 months though.

  20. My Nanos ended up near EOL. Dealer quoted 3/32 even though they quoted 5/32 last September. So, I ended up getting GY Assurance Maxlife. These are definitely NOT eco tires, but are pretty close to eco tires at 44 psi.
