If you have a misfire, that would cause all your codes and the symptoms. You don't have a P0420 (yet) because either you haven't driven the car so that it runs that test, or one of the present codes "blocks" the cat test from running.

It doesn't matter. Fix the misfire- usually is ignition (get name brand parts from reliable sources as counterfeits are known problem). Could be fuel quality and or injector. Could also be compression.

Running the engine long enough with a misfire WILL kill the converter.

If you have a failed cat, dont toss it or flat out replace it, until you try CLEANING it, PROPERLY.

For MELTING burnt on carbon, that usually needs to be wire brushed, there is only one product that works, chemically, i would fill that cat with it and let it sit overnight, then flush it with a garden house, then fill a bucket with warm water and dawn and dump it in there then garden hose flush it again. Try it, you will be surprised at the results on a failed convertor.

    Berryman Chem-Dip Carburetor Parts Cleaner

Now wait DO NOT JUST GO BUY IT BECAUSE IT IS THE MOST CONFUSING PRODUCT ON THE MARKET
THEY HAVE TWO LOOK ALIKE PRODUCT AND ONE WORKS AND ONE DOESN'T AND IT WILL MELT AND DESTROY PLASTICS.

I am going to get the PROPER part number I have to drive to get it so stand by.

I use this stuff toe MELT carbon on valves egr traces piston rings, it washes right off and the carbon goes down the kitchen sink.

I use it in a harbor freight ultrasonic cleaner, it gets hot, i use it indoors,no problem with fire etc.

THERE ARE TWO PRODUCTS WITH THE EXACT SAME NAME AND TWO DIFFERENT PART NUMBERS, STAND BY...

    These are TWO DIFFERENT CHEMICALS
The rectangular one is WRONG DO NOT USE IT
It is the REFILL for a different round can

The round can is the RIGHT product ONLY IF it has part number 0996 on the back of the can
There MAY BE a cost effective refill rectangle can for part 0996 if so I would buy that instead of the round can
THE PRODUCT IS REUSABLE OVER AND OVER, THE ROUND CAN HAS BEEN USED FOR YEARS NOW.

    zboth.jpg

PART NUMBER 0996, THIS IS THE RIGHT CAN, IT MELTS CARBON
NO OTHER PRODUCT I TESTED DOES WHAT THIS DOES.
    zright.jpg

I ORDERED THIS NOT KNOWING IT WAS A REPLENISHER FOR THE WRONG PART NUMBER, THIS CHEMICAL DOES NOT MELT CARBON, IT DOES MELT ALL PLASTICS

Yeah thats nasty stuff so do not buy it, the other one is nothing like that chemical in the rectangular can, that 0905 is some hazmat stuff man.

I didnt know I was buying that, the marketing on the cans is way too similar, now I have two gallons of that crap

When I opened it I thought GREAT, EPA MADE THEM CHANGE IT,
I put it in my ultrasonic cleaner tank
The rubber mat in the bottom
WAS GONE A FEW MINUTES LATER, disappeared.

I cleaned the throttle plate (first time doing an in-depth cleaning) and MAF sensor again, just to make sure, and then used a copious dose of fuel preservative from Penrite, a local brand in australia. I also checked the catalytic converter to make sure there was no rattling and it seemed perfectly fine.

Unfortunately I followed YouTube star mechanic “Scott” in the sunglasses video for cleaning the throttle plate, which consists of spraying copious amounts directly onto the plate and the inner throttle…. I wasn’t comfortable with the pooling I saw and tried to absorb everything I could see with a rag… It caused very very loud knocking and rough idling when restarting the car…. Thought it was dying! But the bad smell went away after several minutes.

I need to do more tests tomorrow to find out what may have happened.

I use a CRC specific throttle cleaner and another can of MAF sensor spray - discovered that early on after Patrick Wong’s recommendations. I’ve been a long time lurker, since 2011, but somehow this is my first thread and post!

Thanks Tracy, someone this post did not appear for me until now! Not sure what happened. I’ll keep it in mind - misfires are still happening and my Mini VCI is at least 1.5 weeks away. I may try to clean the injectors. Has anyone tried making one of those jigs for spraying directly through the injectors? Do you have any Prius-specific instructions?

Did you remove the MAF sensor and clean the elements that are tucked down inside?

Yes i sprayed the thing with the exposed bulb, and also the two filaments that are down the middle quite far inside the long plastic bit. Hope there wasn't a third place that I missed?

I have an inspection scope so I'll try having a look inside the spark plug bore. The spark plugs were changed 75000 km ago, so I reckon they should still be good, but they are likely fouled after all these injector issues.

By the way, Denso now recommends a d different spark plug : IK16TT. Has anyone used them? SK16R11 is not even in the list, might be a new model

Maybe it's an Australia thing. Or even 'supply chain'? Selecting North America on the Denso website shows 6 available recommended models of DENSO spark plugs, including the SK16R11(Denso 3324) and the IK16TT (Denso 4701), both available from Rock Auto for about 8 bucks each.

Is rock auto reliable and do they sell genuine parts? It is roughly the same price through them compared to an Australian online retailer, and it may even arrive at the same time

I have a set of SK16R11s in my 2007 that I purchased from Rock Auto about 5 years ago. Right around 80k miles on them now and still running flawlessly. I have 3 more sets in the garage ready to go for the other cars. Every Gen 2 Prius I've bought has gotten a set from RA.

Awesome thank you, i will likely buy new ones from them as well as a pcv valve and VVT filter replacement. Likely a valve cover gasket as well :(

I inspected the spark plugs tonight after work and they suck, there's lots of dark used oil in all wells except for #2 which seemed loose... I tried cleaning as much as possible but there's still some left, too hard to reach... I read I can try to tighten the valve cover to fix this and avoid replacing the gasket.
    overall image 2022_06_22_23.39.25.jpg
There was already oil in the wells 60,000 kms ago when I changed the spark plugs, so this has been going on for a while. At the time, I thought it was because i spilled oil, but today I know more :( I had forgotten all about it until today.

My bores look horrible, all black :( the first mechanic I used significantly overfilled the oil, and it took me a week to find out, which is when I decided to change it myself. Oil and filter have always been changed with full synthetic 5W30 every 10,000 kms, along with the filter, so it is likely related to gasket problems going for so long. This explains my oil consumption.

I wonder if my engine is screwed or if this is just an accidental find unrelated to the current problem :(

I plan to try this way of cleaning the cylinders... But not sure how to crank the Prius ICE without making it start as per - 8:45 to -7:55 in this video
