    Lots of police are harassed by people who sterotype them. This is why a lot of them are quiting all over the country leaving more places with a lack of police, which further makes matters worse as the few police available are new and aren't enought to get the job done.

    I do sympathize with the OP about not having a car. As a single car family of 4, I often keep an eye out for what would be our options if something like this were to happen to our car. And right now, if our car were totaled or stolen and if we only got the KBB value of $6,000 from insurance our options would be very slim, if not impossible for finding another car. We'd definitely be walking for quite some time for sure.

    Totally agree ! I don't want to give the impression that I am anti-law enforcement. Quite the opposite. As messed up as all of this was, each of the officers I spoke to were very sympathetic, and they all expressed frustration over the situation in CA. Believe me, you could see the frustration when the officer told me those criminals would be out in 2 days, even if they did catch them. Thank you Newsom. I say, MORE police funding, and a smaller, better ran, less corrupt Government.

    For sure. And that was something I considered. But still not sure how they could have stopped the alarm (horn) from going off ? And in our quiet neighborhood, that would have certain gotten attention ?

    Lots of cars can be dragged or physically picked up without triggering alarms.

    It's when a door gets opened...

    Many factory systems can be augmented with a tilt switch or other sort of motion sensor.

    The bad news is that there is something in your neighborhood loud enough to set it off just by sound pressure. It might only be once every other year, but it might be twice a week.

    I can't tell you what the something is- garbage trucks moving dumpsters? Neighbor starting a harley? Legit minor earthquake? Point is, if you're parking on pavement in California, it's loud enough there to cause a problem every now and then, so think about it before adding one to the next car.

    TY. Well, the next car will have an alarm, but maybe more importantly, it will have LoJack ! In fact, we are going to get that on my GF's truck right away, an my new car from Day 1 !

    I'm assuming that is Carson City NV ? Sure. I was through there a couple times last week actually. Nice town.

    I see the 12volt battery is missing - may have been first to go? I assume alarms don't work without a battery - or is there a backup?

    Okay, yes ! I did call One Toyota this morning, and didn't get an answer, but will try again tomorrow. Honestly, this morning I was kind of just testing the water... But hopefully in a couple days I should get a settlement check on my destroyed Prius, and then I'd be ready to walk in and write them a check if I can actually find an acceptable one in stock, with no markup. As a matter of fact, I think I already might have, if it's not gone in a day or two by the time I get my check... But if I already found one, I think I will find another.

    BTW, it was freaking silver, which I would not drive that way lol But that's okay... if I get the deal I want, I'll immediately get a really cool wrap on it. And have a color I like 10 X's better than anything Toyota offers anyway. And for another $600, I could probably get some wheels I like too.

    Stereo is going to be super straight forward, as it will be exactly what I had in my last one... That only cost about $1500 total, and sounded like $10K. Plus it was totally stealth, factory head unit, with a digital sound processor to make the signal good, solid 5 ch amp, etc. Probably the best sound quality daily driver system I've built, in my 40 years of playing with car audio

    Are you sure about the 7,500-mile part?

    As I understand it, all current Prius and Prius Prime cars built for the U.S. market are certified to meet both EPA and CARB standards, so California has no objection to their being registered here as new vehicles, regardless of odometer reading. (Check the certification label under the hood before you buy one, of course!)

    A buyer would have to pay Nevada sales tax, if the vehicle is delivered there, but the amount paid (but not any fees for Nevada registration, movement permits, etc., as applicable) would be allowed as a credit towards the California use tax.

    I looked deeper. The 7,500 mile issue shouldn't be a problem with a Prius or other car built to CARB standards.

    It was a big bugaboo back when I moved to California because there were still a lot more "49-state" cars on the road at that time.

    Yes, I did some research too, and now, the only thing which is kind of a non-issue anyway, is that even if you buy a car somewhere with really cheap registration and / or taxes, you will actually have to pay the reg / tax from the state of your home address, which for me in CA is ridiculous
    high, but its something I assumed Id be paying anyway.
