Air Vents / Blowers / Heater Console Issues

    I have a Toyota Prius 2017 Gen 4.
    I have an issue with the Heaters / Blowers / Air Vents / Heater Console.
    Usually when the cars started/engines on the fans/heaters/AC works instantly as soon as you turn the temperature buttons up or fan buttons up the air kicks in straight away.
    Today however, Everytime I pressed the buttons up & down on the centre console to ask for air or temperature the whole console is not responding as if it is totally dead ..
    there’s no lights coming on it or anything.
    Then, After a minute or two of driving the whole thing just kicks in itself … the heaters start working & the lights come on on the heater console ..
    it’s like there is a delay in it coming on.
    Once the fans are blowing then they stay on.
    But once you switch the engine off & restart the car then again the same issue - there’s a delay in the heaters/fans console actually coming on.
    The cars been recently serviced & the engine coolant is topped up & on maximum.
    Any suggestions/help/advice would be more than welcome.

    I had something similar when the dealership found a mouse nest in the blower above the cabin air filter. When they pulled it out they broke a cross bar which didn't trigger the check engine light but my hvac wouldn't run at start up and when I did turn it on it started as 72f regardless what my last setting was.

    Despite no CEL I did retrieve a trouble code B1442 with my Carista connected to the obd2 port.

    It's possible you have a problem that will give a code but doesn't give a dash warning. If you don't already have your own scanner you can stop by a parts store, many offer free code checks. I recommend this because I brought the problem up earlier to my dealership and they just said the ac ran and blamed it on my setting it to eco. If you can say there's a code and what that code is they'll know to actually look into it.

    Has the dash ever been worked on? New radio?

    Hi MalachyNG,

    So i plugged it into a diagnostic machine today.. the faults coming up were mainly to do with the A/C & so on.. when I delved deeper the fault code showing was:

    B1448 FACE Servo Motor Circuit (Passenger Side)

    I tried to delete these fault codes but they wouldn’t be deleted / kept showing up on the diagnostic so clearly there is an on-going issue there.

    Again I just want to clarify that once the heaters / fans kick in (usually around 1 minute after starting the car) then they stay on & work as normal - no problems whatsoever with the Hot & Cold Temperatures, the Speed of the Air or the AC - no strange smells no nothing. All works fine once it comes on.

    I can’t seem to find much information online in relation to this fault code either so it doesn’t seem like a common fault for Toyota Prius.

    It’s really baffled me so far.. even my mechanic can’t work it out.

    I really hope it’s not a Toyota Dealer job!!

    Any more ideas / suggestions ??

    Hi fotomoto,

    No I’ve not had no work done on the car whatsoever & certainly nothing has been interfered with on the radio / dashboard side of things.

    Its just totally random - just happened all of a sudden. No idea what could’ve brought it on.

    Also just for further information my mechanic opened up the glove box & got to the Heater Blower Motor & all seems fine & intact - no signs of any loose wiring or loose connectors or chewed wires etc.

    Also the Pollen Filter is in reasonably good condition.

    This at least shows where the system's four servos are. They are callouts 87050C, D, and E, and 87130K.

    I could take a guess at which one is the "FACE servo (passenger side)", but I don't have a Gen 4 repair manual to look at (Toyota Service Information and Where To Find It | PriusChat), so you'd be ill-advised to trust my guess.

    That illustration applies to left-hand drive models. On @AdeelUK's car, which I assume is a right-hand drive model built for sale in the U.K., the arrangement is different, with the blower assembly on the opposite side of the air conditioner.
    See the B1448/48 diagnostic procedure in the Repair Manual available by subscription to toyota-tech.eu. The edition published there, unlike those available in the U.S., includes the text and illustrations for RHD models, which have different designations for the servo sub-assemblies.

    My C-Max Energi had a blend door issue when it was newish.

    It would blow HOT air out of the passenger vents not matter what the temp setting was.....but only in hybrid mode and only after it had been running in hybrid mode for a good while. Since I drove it mainly around town in EV mode or in hybrid mode for just a few minutes after depleting the battery, the issue was hidden most of the time. Replacing that assembly fixed it.

    A blend door is one of the HVAC actuators, but this issue seems to involve a different one.
