I recently purchased a 2022 Prius Prime and need to replace the rear license plate bracket.
Does anyone know the part number for the rear license plate bracket and how to access/replace it?

The dealership used the wrong screws and/or cross-threaded the mounting bolts when they put on the temporary tags. After getting the bolts off with an impact driver, I tried to re-use them to reattach my permanent tags (out of necessity due to a time crunch) and one of the bolt heads sheared off.

I agree but they are an absolute nightmare and I can't drive without a license plate so I'm exploring every possible solution

I’d suggest making every attempt to remove the remains of the damaged bolt and restore the threaded hole.

The threaded bosses for the license plate screws are part of a steel reinforcement panel, shown in a Toyota bulletin for an unrelated problem, T-SB-0149-19 Rev1, “Corrosion on the Back Door Steel Reinforcement Panel Around the Opener Switch and Rear Camera” (PDF), February 10, 2021. In Figure 3 at the bottom of page 4, the bosses are near the lower left and right corners of the red rectangle labeled ③. You can also see the reinforcement panel, the bosses, and the openings for them in the outer panel, which is made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic, in a cutaway illustration for an article in Toyota’s Collision Pros magazine, “Exploring Toyota’s Vehicle Metals” (PDF); zoom at the bottom of page 2.

As far as I can tell, Toyota doesn’t sell the reinforcement panel separately; instead, you’d have to buy a complete back door panel sub-assembly, 67005-47915, list price $3,647.91, as shown in Figure 67-08, Back Door Panel & Glass, and have it painted—or find one in a junkyard. (In the catalog figure, don’t be fooled by PNC 75129C; those aren’t fasteners, just the round, rubber cushions that keep the license plate from rattling.)
If you can’t restore the original holes, you could consider mounting the license plate itself, or a new license plate bracket, using automotive-grade, double-sided foam adhesive tape, of the same style as is used to attach the “Prius Prime” name plate to the back door panel sub-assembly.

Thanks for the thorough response. I tried to use a screw extractor to remove the bolt but had no luck. On the bright side, the dealership is going to do the repair and provide a loaner so I won't have to DIY it.

For anyone finding this thread in the future, from looking at the reinforcement plate in the referenced bulletin, the 2022 model is setup differently. The bosses are attached to a plastic structure (vice steel) and have a ton of travel when you press on them. There's also a hole in the plastic piece that isn't present in the referenced steel reinforcement plate of you're still not convinced. That said, I suspect the larger point about needing a new hatchback assembly is probably still correct as there does not seem to be an easy way to access whatever piece contains the bosses without some major panel removal work.

It’s a weld-nut, with distorted threads? Screw in the correct size* of metric thread tap, with some light oil, try to straighten out the thread damage.

    * What would that be, M6x1.0?
