Just one day with my used Gen2 & I marvel at the function driving traffic light to light
noticing the motor has been off the last 15 minutes ( as long as you drive gentle from light to light )
    These buggers deliver mpg .
The oil question ? 2008 5w30 oil was considered the choicest types for efichency
not to mention 5w30 was conevential , flash forward today zero weights in synthetics are the current top types for efichency A 0w20 0w30 in synthetic would be best choice for motors shutting on and off due to faster flow i'm leaning towards a 0w30 Has anyone used a 0w20 in a gen 2 with good results

I immediately noticed a slight MPG improvement on long trips when my Gen2 switched to 0W-20... And because this is recommended oil for Gen3 Prius, it seems congruent with what their recommendations were as they changed over time.

Ask a service department or two? I don’t think there’s been a gen 2 oil spec revision from Toyota? You can get synth 5W30, if that’s your concern.

Synthetic will be choice zero or 5w would logically work as each go 30 weight 0w20 would offer less resistance but it's my opinion from casual reading , cars using thinner oils also have tighter tolerances . Id figure 2008 motors are built around what was the standard but id say for sure zero weight (start up ) will allow motors less oil starvation in the extreme cold . I do live up north
30 weight not broken have to see

245k on my gen 2 Prius. Burns a bit of oil. So I top 1 quart after 1200 miles and do oil change 2700 miles (as it comes near low level). I use the Walmart quaker state synthetic blend 5w30 .
Any recommendations for the type of oil to use so I don't have to bother for 3000 miles?

You might want to try full synthetic and see if the oil stays cleaner longer... This is a normal amount of oil burning for 1/4 million miles and there's no need to change the oil entirely when it gets old after adding the first quart, just keep adding more. As in 3K miles is way too soon and wasteful, especially if you use a full synthetic that's good for 10K miles. Though on older engines like yours I do it at about 8K miles. And once you're burning significantly more than a quart every thousand miles you're gonna wanna do an engine swap with a lower mileage used one, which are much more affordable than you might think.

How many miles on your gen 2 Prius?
How often you do oil change ?
Do you have to top it off in between oil changes ?

245k on the 2005, 165k on the 2004. Change oil ever 10k. No oil needed on either between oil changes.

That's interesting. Walmart has mobil 1 5w30 fully synthetic but they recommend oil change every 5k miles for it.

10,000 mile oil change intervals and you require NO oil to be added between changes? And the oil level is still on the dipstick when you hit that 10k point?

Yes, believe or not no oil between oil 10k changes, both cars, maybe it's the Motorkote.

I took advantage of 46* nice weather this past Sunday after reading another oil-change thread. My ’05 G2 just turned 179,000-laps. Since a coupla months after I got it and tuned it to the edge ... I’m getting 60-mpg. I do however drive like a general grandmother. It burns NO oil. I’ve never had to top it off.

I go with the top-line oil filter from whatever store I’m shopping at; this time NAPA. And I use 1-qt each of the following products. Hey look ... It’s just me ... That’s the way I roll. I
    m funny like that.

Mine was giving 46 mpg after I used stp high mi oil treatment....but now back to 42mpg without it...I didn't find the stp high mi oil treatment so just added the regular stp oil treatment...maybe that's why.
I use the synthetic blend 5w30 quaker state oil

anyone else with high mileage gen 2 Prius - is full synthetic 5w30 the way to go ? How often is your oil change if you use full synthetic 5k? Do you top off in b/w oil changes
Any ideas of improving mpg? 42 seems pretty low

By-the-way ... I don’t think the oil-change had all that much to do with the MPG that I get, other than maybe that I do change it regularly. The 60-mpg that I’m getting is from the “Grandmother” way that I drive. Nobody is ever gonna confuse a G2 with any kinda sports-car ... and I certainly don’t drive it like one. I’m the guy in the right lane that everyone blows around as soon as they can. I stay within 2-mph of the limit and rarely-if-ever go over 65-mph. I glide into stoplights and never blow out of them. I use cruise-control whenever I can. I bought the 0W-16 this time because ... why not? I ran a race-car for an entire season on Rislone. I love the stuff. Hy-per Lube is also a Rislone product. The reputation of Lucas products speaks for itself. I’m not at all telling anyone to use what I use. I’m just saying that I like what I use and I’ve got a really good history going with what I use.
