I recently put my $500 downpayment in for a PP and I'd like to know what people's experience is with insurance. I've seen very little discussion on the forum about that, and even then, it degenerated into "you're a bad driver hence your high premium". Due to the many variables involved (driving experience, location, other vehicles on the same policy, US$ vs CAD$ etc, etc), I'd propose to only keep the conversation to % increase or decrease of your premium from your previous vehicle - but please state what you were driving before the PP because that could have a relevance. The absolute $ of the premium aren't even all that important.

I'm certainly hoping that the PP won't be too affected by the issues that I've heard about Tesla, namely that due to the lack of information related to the battery pack (Elon won't share anything), any scratch around the bottom of the car - where the batteries are located - will turn the car into an automatic write-off. By the way, where exactly is the traction (High Voltage) battery pack located in the PP? My RAV4 hybrid has it under the rear seat, but that's a much smaller pack.

all electric vehicles have higher premiums due to some unknowns as of now, and repair costs.

prime shouldn't be mu ch more, except that you now have a new vehicle vs the age of your old one.

Agreed with all that, but how MUCH more are we talking about? Trying to get a feel for it.

Anytime I contemplate buying a new car, I simply check with my insurance company and they tell me how much the new policy is going to cost. There might be a small adjustment based on the actual vehicle I buy, but the estimate is always in the ball park.

BTW, would you mind if I direct message you? I’m contemplating buying a RAV4 Hybrid or Prime.

Prius Prime is an expensive car = high insurance premiums.

I was driving a 2012 Subaru Impreza. I got a 2023 PP SE. My insurance went up 25% - I think it was mostly the age?

Td insurance claims to offer a 'green' discount. I'm with them; they claim i'm getting the discount. My perception is that a rav4 as a sports utility would come with a bigger premium than a Prius sedan (hatchback?)

Plus the rav4prime is a more expensive vehicle, in most trim levels....if you're comparing an XSE or XSE Limited Prius with a Rav4Prime SE...that could be the exception 5 percent green discount.JPG

No, not at all. I can give you my opinion on it. Had the RAV4 XLE Hybrid for 3+ years. Not the plug-in, that one just came out recently.

Insurance agents (at least agents for my insurer) can give you a quote based on a VIN. So, find a car that meets your sp[specifications on the Toyota Inventory website and give it to your agent. Since they can reference your current policy, you'll get a great read.

So just for reference, I currently own (will be traded in next week) a 2022 Subaru WRX premium. I just did another quote today a few days before picking up my 2023 prime XSE to confirm if the rate changed and it’s still showing roughly 6 dollars a month more than my WRX turbo sports car. Clean record, no tickets no accidents, homeowner, and every discount that you can think of. This is with USAA.

Granted, yes, Subarus are extremely safe but I think everyone knows that a lot of younger kids do get WRX’s and wreck them probably raising the rates for everyone else. I was kind of surprised that the prime was more than my sports car but it’s probably because the PHEV / HV are so expensive to fix. Whatever though, I’m putting 65+ bucks a week in 93 octane into the WRX. Within a few weeks of driving on EV mode the Prime will pay for itself in money saved in gas I would’ve spent let alone the slightly more expensive insurance.

I did an online quote for my Vin on the incoming car, but I do need to call them and ask if it makes any difference the fact that the prime and the Prius were just awarded the insurance awards safest vehicle award last week.

Edit: Our other car is a 2019 Hyundai ionic Blue hybrid, which coincidentally is also quite expensive to insure. So yeah Hybrids / PHEV’s / Ev’s are kinda pricy to insure…. as others have said, simply call your insurance or go online submit the Vin and get a quote. It only takes a few minutes.

2nd Edit: I also saw on the news today that car insurance premiums have been affected very much so due to inflation.

On today's Yahoo finance web site:

Here are the five vehicles that top Mercury Insurance’s 2023 list of the cheapest new cars to insure:
    • Chevrolet Spark

    • Mazda 2

    • VW Golf

    • Hyundai Accent

    • Toyota Prius Prime

They might want to update their info. Production of the Spark stopped last year. The last Mazda2 sold to the public in the US was called the Toyota Yaris, though it might be available as fleet only from past Fueleconomy.gov entries.

It surprises me a bit, because the other four are all sub-compact cars and I didn't think that the PP would qualify as such.

With all the talk about insurance, I still don't know where the traction battery is located in the Prime...

Like has been said, under the back seat like some previous Priuses/Primes, but now it's accessed from the bottom instead of from the interior. Or to put it another way, it's now an exterior component rather than an interior.

The battery is still an interior component on the HEV Prius.

Just to add a bit more data. We picked up our Prime XSE Premium a few weeks ago and finally getting past all the initial insurance paperwork and have stable billing. To my amazement, premiums for my new Prime are LOWER than for for my wife's 2014 Prius V??!!

The delta is about 30%, so huge! This is weird enough that I plan on calling to make sure something isn't messed up, but at first look, both policies have pretty much identical coverage and deductibles. Collision is higher, but liability and medical are lower. The minor stuff like roadside assistance, rental, etc. are all lower too.

Weird. Still compared to my old 2003 Prius this Prime is replacing, is a big jump. That car got "totaled" by a hailstorm 10-ish years ago, so I have only been liability for a decade. Compared to it, the Prime is a 2.7x jump in premiums!
