Programming Prius key fob

And then at the end of this year is when you need to get seed codes and all of this kind of nonsense to make it all happen again That's why it's important to get at least one original fob when you buy the car or get ready to have a bunch of fun.

 

I have a need to program a second key for my newly acquired Prius. I have a spare factory key from another Prius I no longer have and want to make that work with the current Prius. I hope to manage this with Techstream... will post back success or failure.

I have SKS. Just noticed the Key Programming sticky thread... 37 pages !! wow. TL;DR. will check out later to see if TechStream was addressed/used

 

I tried with tech stream and it told me I had 2 of 5 keys registered. I have one working key so I used the function to clear all keys (less the one I have). That function left me with 4 keys left that I could register.

the registration process fails for the other key but it was simple. Press lock on the good key and within 30 seconds hold lock+unlock on the new key for 1 second and then lock on the new key. Simple but it didn’t register

I need to investigate one requirement which asked for the following to be true:
Immobilized codes have been registered
Power engine switch is ON(IG)
Smart cancel function is off

not sure if any of those were OK. I had the car in ACC (2presses). That alone may not be what was expected.

After searching around a little bit looks like smart cancel indicates that the sks system should have been turned off using the button under the steering wheel. Not sure how to register the immobilizer code of the new key. Probably needs to be inserted in the slot at some point

 

Two presses of the Start button (with foot off the brake) is IG-ON. One press is ACC.

If you are using a used fob you need to reseed the car to use it.

If you want to use the process you used the fob needs to be brand new and never added to a car.

I'd expect that the SKS disable function should be off (button in out position) to be able to add a new key, but I could be wrong.

 

I did more digging and I think I understand what my options might be

I may be able to use tech stream to have the Prius recognize the second key’s immobilizer code that would let it start the car if it is placed in the key slot. I would have to use the metal cut key to lock and unlock because neither keyless entry or sks would be working

I would have been able to setup the second key for the Prius if it was never assigned to a different car either with a chicken dance or by using tech stream. In that case a Virgin key from a dealer would work ($350 locally) I have also found a service on eBay that will virginize the existing second key and mail it back to me in a state similar to a new key for $18 + shipping

Finally another option is to do a reset of my keyless entry to act as if the system was new and ready to accept multiple keys. For that I would need tech stream and a cable good enough to run a tech stream utility to provide a new externally generated code based on my VIN and a long character sequence provided by tech stream.

the code I need to provide can be calculated by online services that sell tokens that can be used in their “calculators” to generate that code. Tokens appear to be sold for $10 or 5 tokens for $25. In summary I could run this sks erase and reset using tech stream and then follow a procedure to generate a code and get the smart key system into a state where all keys could be added easily. I would then add both of my keys (existing master and second used key) again and both should have full sks capability
