red bullet for the 5th gen prius

    15370-25020 is the item in question, they're like only like 80 bucks. All it does is press a plunger on the cam which opens the secondary vvti oil circuits. I have no doubt in my mind it could be built to open faster but it's likely the OEM one is already measured in milliseconds. My other vehicle has the older style solenoids and that one is also measured in ms.

    I don't disagree with any of that, but I was trying to point out that that the M20A doesn't use that type of solenoid to adjust intake valve timing, only exhaust valve timing. Intake valve timing is adjusted by the $1k part. And since any real performance gain would have to come from adjusting the intake timing...

    There can be some benefit from altering the exhaust cam timing. On my other vehicle it is very common to install a -3 exhaust cam gear. The idea is that it allows more of the spent gases to be exhausted so there is more room for the fresh charge.

    I must apologize to the OP who created a really good debate for this solenoid both positive and negative.

    That’s is why Prius Chat will be around for a long time.

    We all share different opinions which creates a strong community of people who love driving the Prius.

    All I ask is to keep an open mind and express your opinions from experience. I work on these cars all day so I am bringing my real world experience to the table.

    btw, my understanding the part in question is part no. 2 on the illustration. or is it part no. 1? or both?

    Actually, the correct answer is NEITHER.
    The good news is that it won't hurt the car - and you can remove it with little evidence that it was there.

    Let's use our adult brains here for a second.

    Other than being insanely overpriced and supported by a builder and a dealerships that make the Ferengi look honest and hard working, the G5 is a DANG GOOD CAR!

    It's a much better-looking car than it's predecessors.
    OK - so that was easy enough to do!
    My three year old grandson could have done that with a hammer.

    The magic part is that the G5 is quite a bit faster, brakes quicker, has a more connected ride, AND it's more fuel efficient!!!

    What the heck are you trying to make better with a $20 internet diet pill?
    If this thing made ANY real-world improvement to performance OR fuel efficiency why wouldn't Toyota be using them instead of spending all of that money on REAL research and development??????

    If I had to guess, an ETC might be an electronics system mangler, and some of this mangling might get done while punching holes in oceans.

    Yep. That's the correct info for the gen5.

    I know I'm beating a dead horse here, but I just want to confirm to everyone one last time that the part you are replacing in the gen5 Prius is not the same one you are replacing in the gen3/4.

    In the gen3/4, you are replacing the INTAKE camshaft oil control solenoid.
    (there is no exhaust variable valve timing in the 2ZR-FXE)

    In the gen 5, you are replacing the EXHAUST camshaft oil control solenoid.
    (the M20A-FXE has both intake and exhaust variable valve timing, but the intake is controlled by something far more advanced than what Red Bullet or Quantum Solenoid can provide)




    Some Toyota engines have one of these type of solenoids on the intake(like the 1NZ-FXE in the gen1/2 and the 2ZR-FXE in the gen3/4), and other Toyota engines have one on both the intake and exhaust(Dual VVT-i). This is known as the old style VVT-i.

    The new style of Toyota VVT-i uses solenoids like these. Most engines use two of them (one on the intake and one on the exhaust), but the Dynamic Force engines like the M20A-FXS in the gen5 only use one on the exhaust. The intake side is controlled by something better.

    This is what the gen5 uses on the intake. Inside that metal shell is an electric motor that spins at the same speed as the camshaft. It alters the valve timing by very slightly speeding up or slowing down and then rematching the cam speed. This system is called VVT-iE.

    Little electronic drive unit for the motor built right into it, too. And that picture doesn't show the two-stage cycloid reduction gearing they have living inside the intake sprocket ... answering the question how this eety beety motor works up the torque to move the camshaft. :)

    My comments arise from the OP's first post, which was a question:
    AS FAR AS.....

    Somebody must have noticed the avatar.
    I'm a retired Navy Chief, and I've been an Electronics Tech for the government and for Big Bell since 1980.
    I have two USN Warfare Designations, "SS" and "EXW"
    The latter is due to the fact that I went into the reserves in the 90s and got bored.
    In theory it should be ETC(SS/EXW) or ETC(EXW/SS).....BUT I used ETC(SS) for personal reasons beyond the scope of Priusdom.

    Today we lowered a 2024 Toyota Prius on RSR coilovers. We were Blessed from him taking the trip from San Francisco to our Shop in SoCal for the 3 hour install.

    I casually talked about this thread on Prius Chat and invited him to test out the solenoid around the block. After a very long time testing the car (thought he took off) he came back with a big smile on his face!

    He then said ‘My wife will kill me’ and reluctantly declined the offer to purchase.

    Took about 5 minutes to remove and we sent him on his way.

    If anyone happens to be in SoCal by Knott’s Berry Farm you are more then welcome to stop by to Test out the Quantum for free.

    What a nice picture showing the Quantum solenoid installed on the exhaust, and the car's original 13090-25010 motor assembly, cam timing still on the intake. @Hammersmith nailed it.

    So is the story now that it doesn't matter whether you change a fancy solenoid for the intake timing (like all the previous gens) or change it for the exhaust timing and leave the intake unchanged, it gives you the same big smile magic?
