I have a 2008 Prius hatchback and the check engine light is on for needing to replace the catalytic converter in bank 1. I can't afford to do the expensive route so therefore I have found a friend who is mechanically inclined and will replace it for me and I'm going to buy one off of eBay but I need to know how do I know I'm buying the right kind of catalytic converter considering there are two in the 2008 Prius. I don't know which one I am supposed to buy it is supposed to be for Bank One but how do I know the converter is for Bank One. If anybody knows please let me know I do not want to buy the wrong thing.

You don't need to worry about all that bank business You have one catalytic converter and one exhaust pipe when you buy one online for a generation 2 there's only a couple options it'll look just like what you have but realize that the catalytic converters used in the Prius are high content or something along those lines so replacing with not the same usually doesn't get your light turned off and if you have to pass emissions in your state you will need to have a factory catalytic converter or one of two federal approved units I think the magnaflow and one other one may carry the EPA certification that may get you through your state not including California That's another ball of wax so I don't know what it is you need to make happen and where I'm in a non-emissions county in North Carolina I can have a pipe or nothing or can I open exhaust if I want in my '09 I have a pipe from the springs that connect to the exhaust manifold and the donut all the way back is just a pipe I believe that's right no converters nothing resonator was cut out all of that and if I put a spacer that I have and I just haven't gotten around to putting it in it may put the light out but where I live the light doesn't matter All I have to do is honk the horns put on the turn signals and show the lights work call the safety inspections $13.

Your better off going to a good auto parts website to get the correct part number for your car.
Online Toyota Parts Superstore | OEM Parts Online
Then take that part number to do a parts search. You'll have a better chance of getting the correct part this way.

    Hope this helps...

This car is titled and registered in Arizona kind of like my county isn't it aren't you about allowed to do anything you want with your cars in Arizona this model shouldn't need an emissions test or anything so then you get rid of the catalytic converter leave the O2 sensor bung in place get a spacer for that and screw that O2 sensor into the spacer you screw in which should be a 90° bend with a piece of converter material in one end of it and that may put your light out for your PO420 code and you roll on for Jesus another 3-400,000 mi you're sitting at 160 or so now so if you don't have to do much don't gas mileage and all that is not affected by this The light is on because the parameter is set too tight they did this in my AE111 Corolla ACDelco did there was a firmware fixed but I don't think there's anything for the Prius they would rather sell you $3,500 converter installed and out the door It's a good look for them for 45 minutes.

I don't know what the EPA smog laws are in Arizona!! She asked how to find the correct part number for her car. That's the information I provided.
It's between her and her mechanic if they just want to fool the sensor and knock out the catalyst honeycomb.
