Replaced brakes and now no drive.

    I did all my brakes - pads, rotors, drums, shoes. I did not disconnect 12V. I got in to test drive and brakes felt good. I went up a little hill and all of a sudden lost power and this horrible grinding and squealing noise appeared in the engine compartment. I checked fuses, tried the ABS jumper reset, hooked up scantool and got a few codes b1421, b1433, b1442, b1443, b1207, b1271 codes listed are seemingly for AC and Gateway. Shifts into drive and reverse, but says weird things on the display. Having a hard time getting a video on here, but have a YouTube if anyone wants to see.

    Update: I followed along this thread 2008 Prius- put into Gear- POP- now only GRINDING noise in D and R. | PriusChat and after jacking up the front two tires, rotating them manually, opened and closed all doors, and starting and stopping the car maybe 20 times we are back in business. No idea what was actually wrong here.

    Sounds like you need maybe a more capable skin tool but I'm not sure because you're reading all these body codes It would seem to me there's maybe something going on besides the body codes. But then again you did breaks and all kinds of craziness seem to happen so when you did the brakes did you crack open any of the hydraulic fittings Guess we'll start there I'm glad you're back in business but you want to find out probably why you weren't in business.

    Yes, that is exactly what happened. During installation of one of the rear brake shoes the hydraulic actuator became overextended and brake fluid shot out. Is this what caused my car to sound like it would never drive again? I love these hybrids, but that was a crazy one to try and diagnose.

    Yes if the shoes aren't seated right this will happen I've had it happen to me twice not paying attention on reassembly now I make sure of it and it would cause enough of a leak I didn't have anything shooting out but I had a leak back there and it would run down the inner part of the drum in the backing plate and drip onto the inner part of the aluminum wheel You can see it standing outside the car looking at the wheel at the bottom of the circumference of the wheel take it apart see the little hook is not properly seated in the groove or whatever was going on push all that back together redo it clamp the springs properly Don't do anything until the drum is on and then you're good to go pain in the butt.

    Replacing the brake system components requires a clear sequence of actions.
    One of them is disabling the system, removing the 12V battery terminal, removing the two relays under the hood.
    If this is not done, then later it will be painfully long to restore the brakes to working order.
