My 2010 is oozing grease from the passenger side outer CV joint boot. It has 185k miles, there are no tears on the boot, and I have not heard any clicks from the axles. Should I just get a boot and replace it? If so is there a guide for this procedure y’all would recommend? While I’m in there, what are other parts I should replace that will likely fail during the remaining life of the axle? Thanks!

Run it till it turns rotor blue from heat he he . Or close. Do nothing you have years to go the engine will blow before that drive axle causes you any problems unless you live in extreme horrid road conditions like outback

With the head gasket issue you’re right, I had to replace mine early this year.

There is likely a tear in the boot. It could be a pin hole, it will leak a lot.
Or is it leaking at the boot ends? There IS a difference.

There is a prodecure, Lot's of work. But you clamp the axel in a vice, cut off the clamps.
Slide the boot away from the outer joint. Then smack the outer joint with a hammer to pop
it off. There is a "c" clip that snaps the joint on the axel and holds it in place.

The slide the torn boot off, and the new one on. Put the clamp on first, then the boot, then slide
the larger clamp over the boot. Align the axel, and smack the axel end(install the axel nut first)
with the hammer until you hear it POP in place. Install new grease and slide the boot over the joint
and secure the clamps over the boot.

Hi so it looks like it’s coming from around the clamp. Perhaps a pinhole in the boot. I’m wondering if it got disturbed when the crown bolt got stuck on the ball joint I replaced a couple months ago.
In addition to replacing the boots, what are your thoughts on a reman one? Any vendors who do the OEM shafts only?

Aftermarket ones are not as good. No reason to replace the whole axel when you only need the boot.

The Car Care Nut’s take, albeit a full rebuild, not just boot replacement:

he advocates rebuild over replacement if possible. Would dealerships take this on, or no?

a possible business model: a shop selling rebuilt axles, taking yours as a core.

Clean off the boot with some Stoddard solution or goof off or it's active ingredient once clean you locate pin hole . Put a fresh dab of goop on that spot let it sit 30 min . Check it out now . Clean the mess off the rest

Thank you! I think I can take this job on. Definitely much easier than my head gasket was. I’m curious about the spider, I’m wondering why can’t it be removed with a 3 jaw puller, which most parts stores will lend. I also checked and there’s clones of the toyota clamp crimper on amazon, I'm wondering if they'll work better than the crimp pliers.
I'm having difficulty finding the boot kit, none of the dealer sites are matching up the part, so I'm going to have to call the dealers to look it up, for some reason their in store system does a better job than their online. I'm also thinking while in there, I should replace both wheel bearings and perhaps the transmission seals? Does that make sense, since it's a 185k car and all that would be aged.

I also saw some toyota dealers sell remanufactured axles, but the same problem, they can't find a match for my prius. Would those be a good option as well? They were much cheaper than the new OEM which are like 4 or 5 times more.

    Thank you!

I have remanufactured axles on several of my Prius no problems at all I mean your axles have 200,000 miles on them I'm guessing . So buying two remanufactured or one remanufactured axle should be a no-brainer I don't everreplace boots n joints ever .I generally buy axles reman locally at driveshaft place . They make and balance my driveshafts for rwd
