    Hey guys,

today I did my differential fluid on my own, and was wondering if using Toyota Genuine ATF WS was the correct choice, I have done some research myself and, from my knowledge, the previous gen hybrids all use ATF WS for both transmission and their axel fluid (aka diff fluid, right?). I have also read that Toyota recently introduced Toyota Genuine E-trans axel fluid and they’re slowly rolling it out to the 5th gen hybrids and EVs. I have made calls to Autozone, Advanced, and the Dealer. Autozone and Advanced both told me that they have no such information in their system, absolutely blank, Dealer strongly suggest that I should not be using ATF WS, and that I should be using Toyota Genuine E-trans axel fluid, is this a big deal or is it just Toyota marketing? Thanks!

Hey there, yes I saw that, the reason I’m asking is because people have said it makes no difference and the price between the two is significant. I’m looking for more of a technical explanation of those two fluids and if they are interchangeable for Differentials. Cheers!

I would change it to TE. The viscosity is different and they're designed to do different things. The transaxle in the gen5 is not the same one as in the gen4, and it was designed with TE in mind.

For an AWD, you need two jugs of this: 08886-81986. Unfortunately, you're going to have about 3/4 of a jug leftover as you need 5.1L and it only comes in 4L jugs.

If you buy in the next 11hrs, you can get two 4L jugs of TE for a total of $105.55.

I’ve found a Toyota doc regarding their ATF WS fluid, states to only use it from freshly opened bottles. The new fluid may have similar edict. Ah well.

Hey there, I read your post from awhile back on the trans axels in the gen5 compared to the previous gen, any thoughts on this? Cheers!

My only thought is do what the manual says - use the TE.

There are cases where you could plausibly argue that previously a car was specced for one thing, and they revised the manuals to allow new fluids without changing the car, so there's no obvious reason the old guidance wouldn't still be valid.

But in this case it's a new design, that has always been specced for TE, so seems wisest to assume it was designed for TE and not to be tolerant of WS.

I love this infamous " some people" . Who are these quote some people?" What are their credentials? Do you get dental advice from plumber? Don't get your car advice from " some people" if you have an accounting question you get your accounting advice from an accountant. Legal advice from a lawyer. Medical advice from a doctor. Dental advice from a dentist. Mechanic advice from a mechanic. You also need to make sure he's versed in that model. A BMW mechanic is not qualified to talk about Toyota's to any level of specificity. He can in general sense of course but when it gets specific no. This is the wisdom you should carry through life. Seeker advice from qualified experts in the field. Drop the some people routine. There's a lot of good guys on here who are qualified to speak on a lot of topics. You'll have to filter through which ones are knowledgeable. It's a pretty good list. But just forget about that some guys routine

I would have just put some TE back in with a magnetic drain plug. The TE is the 1st transmission fluid used by Toyota that's entirely made with electric powertrain in mind. Problem is, how do we know if TE is compatible with WS? Have you done 2 flushs to ensure all of the TE is out? Reverting back to TE will be a costly endavour...

I bought this and there was 20 percent discount. AISelect_20250705_184112_Chrome.jpg

I have 23 LE, this is the correct one right? I will also do my own transmission fluid change. 55k mileage

Yep, that's the stuff. Need 1 for FWD, need 2* for AWD. Strangely full MSRP at Lewis. That's why it's always good to check around different autoparts.toyota.com dealerships to find the best deal. Some places sell full price, some discount it but won't ship it, and others discount and ship it. Best price I found was $49.67 with all discounts, though you'd have to add at least $13 worth of other stuff to qualify for free shipping. A pair of wiper blade inserts would do it.

*with a lot left over unfortunately

I also bought gaskets, but I was not sure which gasket I needed. Repair manual does not say, so I bough these 2 just in case. Because Chatgpt is %100 sure it is ---A0003 one, but in the website, it says it might not fit. ---18008 one will fit. I will see.

Only thing is, I have 1 floor jack and 2 jack stand that came with that. I need to lift the car and make it level. So, it will be difficult. First I need to lift front left and right, then take the floor jack and lift back middle. But I am not sure if that floor jack will fit there. Mine is kinda small.

90430-18008 appears to be the correct one. You need 2. One for the drain plug and one for the fill plug. Same for the rear transaxle for those that have AWD.

Ever consider just going to a Toyota Dealership Parts Department, telling them you need the fluid and fill/drain washers for a 2023 Prius rear differential?

For me, that would be the difference between $209.63(local dealership*) and $104.46. (2 jugs fluid and 4 gaskets)

I think it's worth the extra effort to track down the part numbers and order the stuff myself.

*My local dealerships charge 3% over MSRP. Plus there's sales tax(7.75% in my case).

TODAY I tried to do my own transmission oil change and I failed. First, did I locate the drain and fill bolt correct? See the video, first one is under the transmission and I point it my finger. That one is drain, and second one ın the end of the video is fill bolt, right?

If yes, I can not remove the fill bolt. I tried but I did not want to damage to the nut.

if I go Toyota dealer and give my transmission fluid unopened, would they only charge me labor and do it?

My fair state expects me to pay 7% on anything that didn't have sales tax taken out, so that ends up being kind of six of one, half a dozen of the other here.

But I notice a lot of online sellers do take out state sales tax now. When I went through my receipts at tax time, for last year I only found one thing I had bought online where the seller hadn't taken out the tax.

I’m not familiar with gen 5, that said:

the first bolt you point to may be coolant drain. In screen grab, circled is a good contender for transaxle fluid fill bolt. The apparent bolt just on edge of frame, that I’ve flagged with arrow, “may” be transaxle fluid drain bolt.

    IMG_1181.jpeg

what are you using in your attempts to loosen the “fill” bolt? Hopefully not just an Allen key. You want a ratchet wrench style socket, with the Allen key thing incorporated, likely 10 mm hex, with 3/8” drive. A longer handled ratchet (say 16”~18” long) makes breaking these loose a lot easier.

maybe contact @scotched , get the repair manual?

How can I make sure they are the drain and fill? Some guy shared repair manual for 5 gen prius, but the pictures there are not the same with my transmission. So I don't understand.

Also, i am using 3/8 Torx55 bolt, that full bolt is tor55 I don't know why but it doesn't make sense. I also use breaker bar. But still it was very tight. I spreyed penetrating oil and try to do it again maybe. But I need to make sure they are the correct bolt. The owner of this post can only answer
