Yesterday, I clipped 3 of those orange sand-filled barricades on the highway, with my right side mirror. No damage to the rest of the car, but the mirror will need to be replaced. Last time I checked with the dealer, they quoted me thousands for a basic replacement part (installed).

So, needless to say, I want to source my own part, and replace it myself. I found one sketchy video online, that purports to show the process, so the first step is to source one for myself. I have a request out on the used parts network, but it case it doesn't turn up, any suggestions?

What's your car's "frame number", this, on the driver's door decal:

Amayama "may" have it. If price/shipping is prohibitive, at least it's good to know the part number(s).

Amayama's in Japan and UAE, ships to Canada without a lot of rigamarole, and (so far for me) charges nothing other than price/shipping. They'll often undercut North American retailers, both resellers and dealerships.

Which parts of the mirror got busted?

I don't know gen 5 specifically, but other Prius mirrors I've known have an inexpensive color shell that matches your body color and is separately replaceable, and mirror glass in a small frame that's separately replaceable, and then the kind of big black plastic skeleton itself.

Mine are black, but in reality, it's only the top cap that is missing. I'm sure that part is not available separately, and besides, there may be other damage to the mirror unit itself.

In fact. the remote tilt no longer works, and there is no free movement of the mirror any longer. It also looks like the mount is bent upwards a bit. I'm sure I will be replacing the whole unit, but I'm sure the dealer won't be doing it.

Past experience has not been good; a school bus clipped my driver's mirror on my 2009 Corolla. On that model, the mirrors did not deflect forwards, as they did later. Insurance paid for a new mirror, but I was asked to pay for the $500 installation. I got it done for free by a good mechanic. Very simple; one bolt.

I had a smash-and-grab a few years back with my gen 3. The dealer quoted me $800, plus an 8 week wait, for a new window, and I can only guess the installation cost. I sourced one from a wrecker, for $60, and I put it in myself in about 10 minutes.

Assuming that there's absolutely no damage to the door where the mirror connects to it, it's actually really easy to replace. I think three screws and a couple wiring connectors to remove the inner door trim panel(find a video for that). Then another wiring connector and three more screws to detach the mirror from the door. I believe those screws are Torx, but I could be wrong - it's been over a year since I had my mirrors off. Doing it the first time and being extra careful, it might take between one and two hours for the full job. For someone that's done it a few times, it's maybe a 15-30 minute job. That's not an exaggeration - I bet I could still do it in under 30min even after a year.

Parts - You only need to order two parts. If your profile is accurate, you don't have the 360 camera option(Panoramic View Monitor). That reduces your cost by a lot. The first part number is the entire mirror assembly except for the top cover. It sounds like yours is damaged enough that you need it all. The second part is just the top cover piece.

87910-47680 - RH mirror assembly - w/o panoramic view monitor (MSRP $316.11 CAD)
87910-47690 - RH mirror assembly - w/ panoramic view monitor (MSRP $1145.77 CAD)

    87915-47110-C0 - RH mirror cover - black (MSRP $58.48CAD)

I found this place that sells Toyota parts in Canada at a 20-25% discount: http://www.toyotatownpartsdirect.com

I don't know if there are other places that are even cheaper or if the above place ever has sales. I'd say you're looking at about $350 to $400 CAD in total parts with the 20-25% discount plus shipping and any taxes.

^ Amayama has neither of those, fyi. They tend to stock older model parts.

A bit of an eye-opener, the price for regular vs panoramic.

I don't believe most "discounts." They often mark up just to mark down. Old trick.

Do you understand the concept of MSRP?

Of course, it's designed to discount from.
But some dealers even mark that up. Makes me sick.

No sh!t. But if MSRP is a constant price across all dealerships and parts suppliers, then doesn't using the amount of the discount work to choose who to buy from?

Toyota sets a price of $100 for a certain part(MSRP). Dealership #1 has a 10% discount. Dealership #2 has a 20% discount. Doesn't this mean the part HAS to be cheaper at Dealership #2? Both dealerships started with the same base MSRP of $100. Do you see how this works?

Your view on discounts is only valid if the retailer in question sets both the original and the discounted price. If they control both the before and after price, then the discounted price is meaningless. But if the original price was set by a third party(the manufacturer), then the discount can be used to choose where to buy from because all retailers have to start from the same starting point.

My view is valid enough, having worked many years in sales.

Yeah, my local dealer kind of used the COVID excitement to start printing price quotes where the "your discount" column has the part's MSRP and for the "list price" column they sort of not-quite-double that. Too bad, I used to buy more parts from them.

Agreed. Both my local dealers mark up a few percent over MSRP, so now I only buy from them if it's really cheap(clips, bolts, etc.) or if it's something I need immediately(they can have most parts by the next afternoon). Everything else I buy from a dealership that has a substantial discount under MSRP. And if I can wait for a 15% or 20% sale on top of that, all the better.

I've also tracked Toyota MSRP prices a little bit, so I know they don't alter them around sales(which wouldn't make sense anyway since Toyota MSRP applies to everything while the sales only apply to autoparts.toyota.com. The MSRP prices do go up slightly over time, but that's just simple inflation/tariffs and not price manipulation to make sales look better(which is what Paul is being paranoid about).

In my case, someone broke my mirror cover once and, in another occasion, the whole mirror.

In Gen 4, the color-matched mirror covers are an owner-replaceable part—they just snap on and off.

I replaced the whole mirror myself as well. It does require some tech skills plus body mobility (a lot of kneeling and bending). I did a very good job at the end, probably better than what they would have done at the dealer. The mirror was hard to get, as it was out of stock and backordered. There is no need to order it from Amayama. You can get it from the dealer, but shop and negotiate. Here are the instructions. I am guessing Gen 5 is virtually the same.
