Love our 2012 Prius Plug-in.. best car we've owned, Looking to potentially upgrade to a 2023 Prius Prime SE. Does anyone have any experience with getting 2 road bikes in it (front wheels removed) with the rear seats folded down obviously? and anyone camped in theirs? Also, have an ORU Haven 14' kayak which fits perfectly in the trunk area (with paddles and PFD's on the side) without folding down the rear seats. Yeah, we call it out RV and the 2023 might not measure <pun> up to the 2012 .. but I do like the additional EV range and that 1500 inverter, Thanks all
I remember countless trips where I'd pop off the front wheel and toss my bike into the back. My 2012 Prius plug-in was sold to a friend long ago (and I still see it from time to time). I put a hitch for bikes on the 2017 Prius Prime the day I got it. A roof rack for the 2 kayaks was a must too. Years later, those ended up being good choices. My wife took over kayak carrying, since she still has Prius Prime. The hitch rack went from the hanging kind to the platform kind, since my primary bike is now much heavier... an e-bike... which cannot be carried inside. Long story short, consider the expense of a hitch rack. If you're going to keep the 2023 for a long time, that could be worth it.
My Specialized Roubaix would not fit in my 2024 Prius Prime. Frame size 61cm. I had to continue using my truck to haul my bike. I have the Prime so I don’t know if the non Prime / PHEV cars trunk dimensions differ. Cheers
One should fit, though I've only tested it with a 54cm frame. Two might fit if you stack them with a blanket between, but I would never do that to nice bikes. The cargo room in the 2023 is considerably smaller than in the 2012 you're used to.
I have a 2023 Prius Prime SE and am able to fit my 2013 FUJI NEWEST 3.0 road bike in the back with both rear passenger seats down. For my single road bike, I do not need to remove the bike's front wheel. The roof of the Prius slopes down quite a bit towards the back of the car, so it's most likely gonna be a bit tight getting the bike in as compared to your 2012 Prius, but it's totally doable. As for 2 road bikes with the front wheels removed, although I've never tried it, I'd be confidant that I'd be able to get it done. however, I'd highly recommend placing a towel or something in between the 2 road bikes to protect the paint and components. My bike frame is a 54" FWIW. Good luck!
My e-bike just barely fits in my 2024 Prius Prime Premium Plus, if I remove the front wheel (28 inches). (Residual weight of the bike is 19.5 kg without the front wheel or 500-watt battery). For this, I have to attach a wire to my handlebars so I can pull them towards me as I put the bike past the trunk opening, after which I lower the fork and handlebars horizontally when I place the bike on the floor of the car. I do place a (colored) cushion under the pedal, because otherwise, I think the Prius's floor mat would tear too easily.
Thanks so much to all that have replied so far: john1701a, Roy Peterson, hyo silver, Agent337, and Quovadis007.....gives me hope! lol. I haven't had an opportunity to try to actually load them in a Prime SE yet (think all the Primes should have the same battery pack thus identical room in the back). Currently, in the 2012 I use an old duvet cover as a base, then load one bike, (front wheel removed, rear towards the front) then cargo blanket, then 2nd bike then another cargo blanket then the wheels secured by the pedal of the 2nd bike. So far, after over a hundred 'bike' trips, no damage and as an experiment even had the Oru Haven kayak on top of that, tho' for safety reasons, didn't travel due to the restricted rear vision. One time, I had 3 road bikes loaded, was tight but they fit. One trick I discovered was that with the rear seats folded down, there is a notch at the junction where the base of the seatback/bottom form, by the door. That notch appears even bigger on the '23 model from my observation. Well, that notch is a perfect spot for the pedal of the bottom bike, and that creates a flatter, thus roomier space for the 2nd bike. This is with the rear wheel against the front seat. I'm 6'2" so it still fits in the back. Our road bikes are Cannondales 58 & 54... My current thinking is that if the bottom bike fits, then the 2nd bike (front wheel removed) might have to be switched to having it's front with the handle bars behind the passenger's seat, due to the sloping hatch. Thanks Again, everybody!! Thanks Gain
Agree! I can add a second bike "tray" when I'm giving someone else a ride or need to carry two of my own bikes. Also, I can add a hitch mounted luggage tray when I need to carry extra luggage, or something with awkward dimensions.
I just put 2 54” roadbikes into Prius prime no problem using heavy blankets This time I took frt wheels off Back wheels on gearing facing up Those with di2 & hydraulic brakes don’t forget to put tab in caliper Also dropbar no pressure on shifters Battery will get drained
Thanks for the explanation and photos!! Was the last photo for one bike. and/or do you have to add an identical tray to that one shown? Next, might be a dumb qt.... but is that assembly considered a mod in the eyes of the insurance companies? I have noticed that here in FL they are asking some qts in regards to after-market mods. Not sure if it actually affects the premiums. We do a fair amount of 1000 mi trips with the bikes so one reason for us trying to keep them inside if at all possible, is for weather .. and another is liability.
That is good news! Was this with both bikes' rear wheels against the front seats or were the handle bars up against the front seats? Ours have the rim brakes so no worries there. Can you please explain what you mean by "Battery will get drained"..?? Fun fact .. used to fly with lots of guys who lived in the Trenton/Bright area....small world!!!
Yes both bikes rear wheels on one against the drivers side the other passengers side one bike is rim brake and aluminum/carbon (Kuota /Factor Ostro)Factor is di2 electrical so you don’t want any pressure on the shifters or the system will wake up draining the battery drop bars are pointed down this is the only time I will have 2 bikes in the Prius normally if the Factor bike goes in the Prius wheels stay on with the front of the bike in first
Yes, that's a single tray shown. I have two more that bolt on for a max of three for a a 1 1/4" hitch with a tongue weight of 200 lbs for this particular brand of bike rack, which is a "1-Up". The hitch is not quite a bolt on affair - some minor mods required to the frame hole where the hitch bolts to, and some trimming of the fascia under the bumper. Took me about 1.5 hours to complete taking my time. do not know how that impacts insurance. I'm in California and don't think that's a problem here.
