Head resurfacing, all valve stem seals replaced, hot tanked.
I just pulled my EGR tube 4k miles after cleaning and there’s a baked on oily sheen, so she’s definitely burning oil from somewhere.

What's the oil consumption been like, historically?

But yeah, you mentioned oily plugs.

I assume they lap the valves and checked if it’s all sealed?

I just changed the oil - got 4.1qt out, so it burned right under 1/2 a quart over ~4k miles. Seems insignificant for the amount of oil I’ve seen. I suspected possible leaky injector? Next oil change I’ll have to send some in for analysis, but I haven’t smelled fuel in the oil at all.

The machine shop said they tested it, I don’t think they lapped it. I did do the “water test” and filled both intake / exhaust valves with water and let it sit overnight.. didn’t see any seeping on the combustion chamber side.

The proper test here is a compression and leak-down test.

The shade-tree mechanic test above will only reveal a major valve issue, since gas molecules are way smaller than water molecules. I wouldn't expect this test to fail, since a professional shop did the head - they should've already ran that test. Lapping the valves or not!

I'm just spit-balling, because I haven't had one of those apart. Could those new head bolts be slightly out of spec.? If any of those head bolt holes bottom-out; you may think that it's torqued-down correctly.

Oil burn is more than likely sticky piston rings, assuming the head was done correctly.

    YMMV

The final headbolt spec IIRC was in degrees, I went with FelPro headbolts & cleaned/blew out all the holes beforehand, they all went in without issue, but I suppose it’s a possibility.

Just did a piston soak with b12 and ordered a leakdown tester. After testing & reassembly I’ll run it for a couple thousand miles and recheck the plugs for oil. I agree - leaning toward sticky rings that could possibly be causing my issues.

Water is too thick. If it leaked through, then you have a large gap.

Use wd40 or other light oil, it's very thin and any gap, it will leak through quickly.
