I'm in the market for a Gen5; LE's seem to be hard to find around here.

Anyway, my Garmins have been good to me. On the one hand, they require no cell connection, and on the other hand, they don't provide updated info, at least the ones I've owned.

Has anyone mounted one with the suction cup on the hugely-raked windshield? It seems like it could be problematic.

    No Problems here.
All Garmin come with lifetime map updates. Depending on the model, the high-ones; you simply input your WiFi login and password - as soon as it sees it, the updates are automatic. The cheaper models will require you to plug it into your computer for updates. Just follow the instructions on your computer screen. Warning; it's going to take a few hours if it's your first time. Subsequent updates will take less than an hour. You'll need at least an 8GB micro-SD memory card, if your going to load maps for the entire USA onto it.

    Hope this helps.....

FYI; the new software prevents you from making route changes "on the go"; you need to pull over and stop to make changes.

I have a Garmin nuvi 2957 for about 10 years now and love it.

We have used it all over the country and Canada.

I use the bean bag mount and just set it on the dash were it's convenient.

I do a manual update about once a month or before a trip.

I personally don't like those because I'm in the mountains a lot. They tend to slide across my dash when I take a turns or go around hair-pin turns - then everything goes wonky until a stable GPS signal is reestablished. That gets tricky under partial tree cover as your moving.
Another option is those suction-cup articulating/extension mounts. I don't like those either because the arm tends to exaggerate the car's suspension movements. All that movement and bouncing around gives me a headache after a few hours, but your brain may not be sensitive to that. I can't read while in a car either, same thing happens to me. Planes and ships, no problems.

    YMMV

The only time I had a problem with it sliding around was when I used amor all on the dash.

I've used Garmin's for years and like them.
Didn't know about having to be stationary to change route, thanks.

I've been reading...does the Toyota Connect navigation system require cell service, even if the on-board big brother service provided by Toyota, or can it operate without a cell signal for maps, like Apple Maps, et al? Cell service is not everywhere, and the phone mapping systems usually only download the local area, although you can enlarge it if you want, I think.

Rammount has a lot of options for mounting phones/gps/cameras in cars. I am currently using some painted steel plates purchased from amazon with adhesive on the back to hold my iPhone attached in an X-Grip phone holder to one of their double socket swivel and ratchet arms with a magnetic base (66mm size).

Here are some pics of the parts.

ram mount magnetic base.jpeg ram mount ratcheting swivel.jpeg x grip.jpeg

All the components are on the left side of the dash and I have been using this set up regularly for 6 months now. I can use my phone without triggering the alert from the driver monitoring camera and it holds steady. You probably will not want the X grip for a GPS but they have a lot of options for holding GPS units in cars.

I purchased the ram mount steel plate with adhesive but ended up replacing the adhesive with some stronger 3M tape for mounting to a more difficult location behind the multimedia display. The cheaper steel plate with adhesive on the back from amazon has held up pretty well on the flat portion of the left side of the dash and I don't think I had to replace it.

It requires an internet connection to use the built-in navigation and if you are using wireless android auto or wireless CarPlay you will not be able to use you cell phones hotspot.

If you use a mapping app on your cell phone(google maps, waze, apple maps, etc.) and connect via wireless connection you can than get updated directions through your mobile data connection. The one caveat is that by using the mobile phone apps you can not use predictive efficient drive which allows you to drive primarily on electricity and rely more on your battery charge using built in navigation. In my personal experience without predictive efficient drive i was getting 150 mpg and with predictive efficient drive I am getting more like 200-300 mpg.
