With a Gen 5, Apple Car Play lets you display info in a text form on the infotainment screen from some OBD apps (I know that OBD Fusion and Car Scanner do this) and a bluetooth dongle plugged into the OBDC port. What would be nice, if you could see the 'gauges' display on CarPlay. I think that would be an Apple thing, but Apple incorporated it in an update to CarPlay, would Toyota have to update the relevant module in the car? I assume at the dealer and not over the air? Anyway, that would be nice.
I use the Car Scanner app with a a OBD2 Bluetooth reader, but I don't find it very useful. It used to show me the charge voltage of the hybrid battery, but that feature was removed.
If you want battery vital signs you need to use Dr. Prius app or Hybrid Assisstant, which has a companion app known as hybrid reporter.
Didn't know about that one... What do you like about it? I was just looking at it now.... Is it worth the $6?
I bought it a very long time ago ie 2013 in the Apple app store. I bought the Carista dongle soon after I got my Prius in 2023 but didn't think the app was worth a subscription. So since it was essentially free for me to use OBD Fusion it is definitely worth it. Not the slickest app but I do like having more information than there is available natively on my Prius. For example the flow meter shows the gas engine is running and providing energy but doesn't differentiate between the engine running to circulate fluids and using minimal gas from running to provide most of the power to drive down the road. In the app you can create a gauges for both the electric motor power and the gas motor power. I haven't used many OBD apps but it works. The interface to set up dashboards feels like it could use an update but I do appreciate being able to create custom dashboards.
