Hi all, I’ve got my hands on a 2001 Prius that a coworker had sitting for 2+ years after the cat was stolen. I just repaired the HV battery, but now having trouble getting into reverse. The shifter will go into reverse but the car won’t reverse. Park, drive, neutral and “B” work fine however. As for codes, I pulled a P3120 and C1259. Also have the triangle of death. Currently looking for my J2534 cable from my Volvo-owning days to set up with techstream to get subcodes, but wanted to see if anyone had any ideas as to what the issue could be. Thanks!
When you say "shifter will go into reverse", does the R highlight on the dash PRNDB display? Or are you saying the mechanical shift lever can click to the R position but the R on the dash doesn't highlight? The codes you're not (yet) seeing from the hybrid system are probably going to be most helpful.
The R does highlight on the dash, but there’s no response from the throttle. I’ll update when I can pull the subcodes.
That's an interesting code. 240 means "generator locked" ('generator' being MG1). At first glance, it would seem something has failed mechanically inside the transaxle, preventing MG1 from turning. However, "no reverse" would not be the only symptom of a really locked MG1. You wouldn't have forward either; there would be no starting of the engine, and the car would be hard to roll in neutral. It would be hard to turn the engine crank pulley with a wrench. You haven't mentioned any of those other symptoms. Do you have any of those? At least the vehicle speed and engine speed in the freeze frame are both zero, so that much is consistent, anyway.
Actually, some of those other symptoms are present now that you mention it. I’ve never operated a prius before acquiring this vehicle so I’m not familiar with the normal series of events that happen when starting the car. I haven’t had the ICE start once since I’ve had it, assumed it didn’t kick on until the battery was low or speeds were high enough. Forward drive does work. Pushing in neutral was pretty difficult, assumed the tires were a little low. I’ll try turning the crankshaft with a wrench. Maybe the ICE is seized from sitting? If unable to turn with a wrench I’ll pull the spark plugs and put some penetrating oil in there.
A seized engine would not make pushing in neutral any harder. A seized MG1 would mean you actually were turning the engine when pushing the car. If turning the crank pulley is difficult, lift the front wheels off the ground and see if trying to turn the crank pulley turns them. (Shifter in N, not P.)
