About 3 weeks ago I was driving on the expressway when my temp light came on and white smoke started erupting from under the hood. I took it in, and they said it was an issue with the headgasket but most places around me won't service hybrids.

I ended up doing the headgasket myself; the headgasket was definitely blown in places so it wasn't a total waste of time, and drove it around for a few days after with no issues. Today the same thing happened, white smoke from under hood and temp light but not as severe.

I'm really at a loss, and what I'm seeing from people is that it could be a few things like thermostat, radiator cap, etc. This car has a reservoir with the OEM cap on it still.

Additionally, the hot air will come on after a few minutes of driving but went back to cold when I was on the expressway before this happened.

All in all I replaced the headgasket, engine bolts, and water pump.
I did NOT replace the thermostat, or any of the hoses.

    Any advice is appreciated

What was your sense of the coolant system when draining it and refilling it?

Any chance something is clogged or thermostat was faulty?

Is it possible you or previous owner used some type of gasket sealer product in the coolant in the past?

In general a failed water pump or headgasket or both doesn't create white smoke in the engine compartment...

Any sense of where specifically it's coming from?

How many miles on it, and have you ever cleaned the EGR system?

Another basic question: Has coolant level dropped since the head gasket replacement?

What engine water pump did you buy? Where did you buy it from?

You are losing cabin heat due to a loss of coolant or the coolant flow has failed or was blocked by sealant.

Sounds like an engine compartment leak from the cooling system or a no flow overheat causing the reservoir cap to release coolant.

If it is the reservoir cap it would be releasing toward the passenger firewall.

However white smoke from the front sounds like a leak hitting the hot exhaust. Possibilities include hoses going to the exhaust heat recirculation system, various hoses under the wiper cowl and the four on the egr cooler.

Since you had this symptom the first time, loss of coolant may have caused that overheating and the first blown head gasket. I would find the leak or release point quickly.

Pressurizing a full cooling system would be a good first step. Check for pressure drops and leaks. Then I would monitor coolant temperature with a scanner and warm up the engine to 200f. Check for reservoir flow. The temperature should not exceed 220f in a normal engine.

When fully warmed up, thermostat opens allowing water pump flow to be observed from top hose with light

What exactly do you mean sense of the coolant system? It seemed normal? I am not familiar with cars in general so I don't know what is normal exactly. I have never used a gasket sealer and as far as I know it was never used.

176k, I cleaned the EGR during the teardown. It was very dirty.

    Yes

I should have been more specific. The smoke was coming out of the area where the hood meets the windshield near the passenger side "corner". Your next point is my main question: Is there a way to test this to "force" the issue?

I came across this image someone posted in a different chat. The white cap on that hose that I believe is the bleeder valve: what happens if that is not in the system? That part is missing from my car.

Not used on 2011 Prius and above.

Read my post above for testing.

I will ask my questions again since you have not responded to it yet.
Everything that you wrote about in post #1, points to a bad engine water pump.

The thermostat could have crud, jamming it closed - from the repair. I've seen that before.o_O:mad::eek:
    1. is the coolant flowing?
    2. are the cooling fans turning ON?
    3. Was "stop leak" ever used on this car?

You shouldn't put the cart before the horse - sorta speak..... Don't assume anything, and start with basic troubleshooting.

You weren't very specifc about where its coming from? You didn't bother to pop the hood and look when it was "smoking?"

Also is it steam or is it smoke? If you can't tell the difference that's going to mean you shouldn't be doing your own car repairs and the work you already did was most likely done wrong.

Apparently he is quite the renaissance man; capable of a head gasket job but not ready for cooling system diagnostics.

    Quite amazing.
