Re-starts by itself. Won't start. Loses 12V battery power?

Used to be occasional, now seems to be happening every other time.

When parking & pushing park button followed by pushing the power button to turn it off - it will appear to turn off. About 5 seconds later it will turn itself back on (or at least the MDF and dash lights appear to say it's on). Another push of the power button seems to finally really turn it off. When starting it back up the next morning the radio station pre-sets are all lost, the clock is set to 1:00, the trip mileages are set at 0. It appears as if the 12V had been disconnected. But there are no 12V battery related issues present after that or while driving. Has not displayed "12V disconnected systems" when driving yet.

Another thing that has also started happening recently is that at times it will not start when brake is depressed & the power button is pushed. After giving up for awhile and trying again a few minutes later, it will eventually start. Pretty sure this another symptom of the same problem causing the self starting symptom. So far it eventually does start after a few attempts but concerned it will eventually not start at all. Or that 12V power might be lost wile driving.

Any ideas of the problem and the fix for it?

Because there is no such thing. If you were to disconnect the 12 V supply while the car was READY, it would be totally fine until you turned the car off.

The symptoms you describe are indeed a break in the 12 V supply somewhere from the 12 V battery in the back, right up to the main fuse in the front. If you've checked the connections in the back, then you need to look further afield.

Start with the 12v battery. How old is the 12v battery? Is the battery fully charged? Has the 12v battery been tested to see if it is good?

For clarity, is this the same car that you created a thread about in September 2025 ,https://priuschat.com/index.php?posts/3565547 or is this a different car?

Bad 12V battery? Next time you park it leave the hood unlatched. Before restarting the next day check the voltage between the jump point in the fuse box and any shiny bolt head. Any of the ones on the top edge of the inverter case will work, but wipe it off first, because at least on my car dirt tends to settle there.

Does the car shut down well if you press and hold the power button? That method will work if the capacitor in the combination meter is going out. Not shutting down properly is characteristic of that problem. Not starting at all is more likely to be a weak 12V volt. It is possible I suppose to have both issues at the same time.

Yes. All the symptoms point to a random/loose 12V battery connection somewhere. The fact that it happens randomly points to a loose wire. The one symptom that I don't think fits the break in the 12V supply is the occasional turning itself back on after 5 seconds.

No. But this is the car I flip-flopped the 12V battery with to eliminate the 12V battery as the issue in that other car.

The MDF capacitor is going out. About once a month I get the dark dash display. I'm at about 250,000 miles so figure I'll get that issue fixed at the 300,000 point within a year. Will try to remember to do the long press to see if that prevents that issue. Thanks.

This is starting to make sense to me. The bad MFD is not allowing the car to shut down properly. When this happens, the 12v battery is drained down, and you lose the radio presets, clock etc. Then the car will not start. To confirm, just use a voltmeter to check the battery voltage per post #4.

Thanks for all the input so far. Just checked the ground connection on the battery. I could pretty easily twist the connector on the battery post with just my bare hand. So this weekend will clean both terminals, remove any rust and tighten the nuts. But before that will also have the battery tested at AutoZone. Not sure how old it is. Will see once I get it out if it shows any date.
