Thanks Mike! So it's on its own platform then?

Sorry for getting in the middle of your conversation but here's what I read this morning regarding your platform question... Shares the same platform as the Prius according to Timesonline, UK.

At last, Britain is ready to build hybrid cars - Times Online

Interesting. It'll be the first vehicle (well I guess second since the S-Class will be launchd before the Auris Hybrid) to be offered in petrol, hybrid and diesel!

Well the media here also said that the Prius is based on the Scion xB so I'd take it with a grain of salt.

heh... i like the term "chasis platform", so specific and vagoue at the same time :).

Auris has same platform as Corolla, its Corolla Hatch. It will be interesting to see how they priced the hybrid - it should get decent pricing as no customs are paid since it is from EU. If it is priced similar to 2.0 D4D and it doesnt take too much of boot, we could have win-win situation.

Early next year is refresh for Auris so this is timely.

Is it me, or does the Auris look a LOT like a Matrix? And the Matrix is the closest non-hybrid to the Prius...

    Hmmm...

The problem they may have is that this announcement might put some people off a new Prius! Particularly if the Auris comes out cheaper but not significantly more fuel consumption.

I anticipate that Prius will still probably consume less fuel than Auris because although Prius will likely be heavier, it's more aerodynamic. Obviously this will be a new model, so some things could change on Auris, e.g. aluminium panels where structural strength isn't important, like the bonnet and hatch as on Prius, and they could well achieve lower drag through the use of aero corners, but I don't think very low Cd is possible with the standard cut-off vertical hatchback shape.

"The Auris platform was designed so it could also carry a hybrid system," Otsuka said. "By making it flexible, it can accommodate future overseas production and reduce costs."

The current Matrix, I've heard, was also designed to take in HSD.

The Matrix and the Prius have the same chassis, but they differ in some areas. So it's no issue to make a Matrix hybrid. The body shape of the Matrix is less aerodynamic, but offers better interior cargo room. Other than trim, the cars are very similar.

But make that an eAWD like the THH with an extra MG on the rear axel for me.

That would be the only way not make it into a Malibooboo type hybrid that gets about 2 MPG better than the non-hybrid version, and get AWD.

But maybe two MGs, one for each rear wheel would be better. The you would have four wheel regen braking and four wheel electronic traction control. But unfortunately you would also have a $50,000 car....

If you really want a matrix body for the prius, it probably can be done. If you want the AWD, that wouldn't be so easy... Hell, even the highlander and the Escape hybrids are FWD only...

Huh? That's not true, unless you are making some sort of technical distinction I don't understand.

Also, I would probably prefer a hybrid Rav4 in any case, but it would be an interesting option to have it on a matrix, if it could be done for a reasonable cost.

Are you talking about grafting a matrix body onto a prius? Or are you talking about AWD hybrids?

Grafting a matrix body on to a prius is theoretical. The mounting points for the body panels are the same. But the interior controls would still have to be prius's. The seats, and much of the interior would be the prius's. The parts of the matrix that can be accomodated would be the matrix hood, the door panels (probably the doors) and the lift back and the roof. If you do that, then you would have a "matrix" hybrid. This would be like converting a fiero to look like a ferrari f-40, except you can use real matrix parts. I am not talking about going into a dealership and ordering a hybrid Matrix... I'm talking about dyi modification. Nothing untrue about that...

If you are talking about AWD hybrids... I could be wrong on this, the last time I checked, none of the hybrid SUVs are AWD. Not even the crappy GM ones...
